In answer to your communica tion of May, I woold say, that the names on our great register to date are 5.5G0, and that we are advised of 190-odd on rolls, not j-et entered, on the other islands. Of those which are entered, I would estimate that 1,218 are American, being 90-odd per cent, of the total number of Americans on the islands.and 20-odd percent of those on the club rolls. Eng lish 251, being 26 per cent, of those on tho islands, and 4 per cent of club rolls. But there are prospects that at the next meet ing the objectionable bill will become law. The committee that has had the bill under considera tion has given way to the planters all along and the only point on which a firm fight was made was in regard to the clause that ad mits the importation of Chinese as "domestic servants." That clause damns the bill because it opens a loop-hole for free im migration. And for that purpose the government fuvored the re tention of tbe clause in the bill.
