X. MYSTKHIES OF XATCHE. A French author thus estimates the amount of carbonic acid annually thrown into the atmosphere. He cal ulates the yearly consumption of coal hronghout" tho world at 130,000,000 tons, containing 98,000,000 tons of car bon, which he assumes is converted into 350,000,000 tons of carbonic acid. He calculates the other fuels and il Inminating substances to yield about one-fifth of that from the coal, making in all about 427,000,000 torjs annually, to which he adds n -weight of gas no kss than ten times nreater as the product of volcanic craters and fissures, whence, he says, it pours in torrents. It we lake into consideration the amount of oxvgen abstracted from tho atmosphere bv the respiration of animals, and also that which goes to form the carbonic acid above mentioned, it would cer tainly seem that in part3 containing little or no vegetation wo ought ali to be poisoned. Fortunately, however, we have winds and plenty of plants to dis pose of far moro carbonic ...
