OUR WASHINGTON LETER,. WASIIsGTON D. C., March "2 17,. The House or Senate did not hesi tate yesterday in passing the silver bill over the veto. Why should they hesitate ' The subject had been talk- e, ed over for months in both bodies, until the reporter shuddered as he en p' tered on his morning work, and the wearied Congressman sought in Com- II mittee rooms and at Sanderson's ref- in uge from the ceaseless argument.- - Both Senators and Repiesentatives p1 were ready to vote, and short work p was made of the veto. I doubt if all s, the speeches that have been made y have changed the votes of many mem- s1 bers. The veto drove oneor two men i over to the silver side, and perhaps, n on the whole that was more than all o the previous discussions bad done.- " The final vote was in the tHouse, 1i0; a for passing the bill over the veto, and to 7:1 against. In the Senate 4; to 19.- fl This result has encouraged silver men I more than the original passage of the E' bill. Already further f...

O FFICIA IL Paper oflhe Parish and City of Natchitoches JAM. I. COSGROYE, • . Editor. SATURDAY, - - MARClI 30, 1878. TO THE RESCUE. M. De Tocqueville, in his maus terly work--l)emocracy in Ameri ca, depicts with wonderful accura cy the class of men who enjoy the fruits of victory, won by great parties, lie says in substance, that after a party of principle has succeeded in revolutionizing public sentiment, the command thereof is as a rule usurped ''"by small miten and small parties," whose very idea I of greatness consists in owlish si lence on measures of importance and intrigue and barter to achieve the most minute end. Louisiana has reached this co- 1 dition. The smallest of the small have succeeded to the crown of I victory-won by the greatest of the ' great. This conclusion is inevita ble to those who look below the i surface. The VINDICATOR has been persistently right from the " beginning, and had we met that a support from our confr'ercw of the a Democratic press of this Stat...

OFFICIAL taper ofthe Parish and City of Natehiteshes JA&. . C08UROVE, " " Editor. SATURDAY, - - -- - APRIL 6, 1878. Have We Sinned. The gloom cast over the good people of Louisiana by the decision of the Su preme court in the Anderson case seems to be settling deeper as time advances. The question now is, have we not all along sinned against these men I Ifit be no legal crime to forge a con solidated return, even when the forgery does and has destroyed the prerogative of free ballot, then Anderson and Wells have been shamefully persecuted. Nay. Kellogg, his government and minions, have rested long an wrongfully under the ban of usurpers; and the negroes of Co'fax, the Dewees and Twitchells of Conshatta and the metropolitans of New Orleans have been foully murdered are maltyrs rather than criminals! All the sophistry, the special pleading known to false logic, can never shake that conclusion, horrible to contemplate as it may be. The effect in reason of the do clalon we have succ...

OUR WASHINGTON LETTER. WASHINGTON D. C., March `3, 187?. What is called a deficiency bill, and is now before the Senate, is not prop erly a deficiency lill. But little of the million and more provided for is for deficiency. On the contrary it is for future expenses, and tounch of it for expenses of a new and questiona ble character. If the bill shall get through the Senate the IHouse nunjor. ity will do well to scan it closely. In the discussion of it yestetrday the ben eficiaries-the people who were to lie' continued in the public service-o ac among the worst characters made Ino torious during the two terms of Grant. They are men that no man vouches for. They ate moral and social out casts. OFFICIAL aperofthe Parish and City ofNatcitoches JAs. R. COSGROVE, • . - Editor. SATURDAY, - - - APRIL 13, 1878. Reflections Political. Our country contemporaries are discussing very freely the future pol icy of our party in this Stat'e. There seems to be a "vigor of unanimity" prevading those of them whose opin ions are worth quoting, and we are much pleased thereat. The average "Conservative "is now playing "sneak"-in other words he's lying low, awaiting a full develop ment of the pent up wrath of the peo ple against those who have, for the hundreth time, proven false to every principle of Demoeracy. When that storm bursts, these astute gentlemen will be found "siding with the peo ple," as usual, and assisting, with a woeful and awful oscillation of jaw, in denouncing the shortcomings of them selves. This is not prophetic, because we report experience, and it would be amusing were it not so grim in its results. Louisiana politics are queer-so a life-long Democrat, Mr. Marshall of ...

OUR WASHINGTON LTTEIR. WASHINGTON D. C., March 30,1878. The original Jacobs--the man who visited Mr. Hayes on Sunday night, March 4, 1877, at John Sherman's house, and then and there discovered that Hayes was not all that Republi can fancy painted him- is Senator Hamlin. The words that Senator Hamlin used on that occasion were profane. He said, did Senator Ham lin, "By G-d we're sold." I recall this incident only because a couple of Pennsylvania Republican Congress man, after a year of experience sint ular to what Hamlin had, are just now affecting to be astonished at something Hayes has done or failed to do. It was a matter of an oflice as, no doubt, was Ilamlin's--and this leaves Mr. Hayes in March 1878 with very much the same feelings as the Senator did in March 1877. We may expect that in 1880 the average Penn sylvania radical Congressman will understand things as fully as Hamlin did after the 15 minutes conversation with Hayes. Montgomery Blair's resolution, which passed the Ma...

OFFICIAL Paper of the Pariah and City of Natchitoches JAo. NI. COStROYE, .. Editor. SATURDAY, - - - APRIL 20, 1878. Feeling Bad. an A number of our contemporaries ag who did all in their power, which tl was not great, to aid the legislature Pa in thwarting the will of the people, th are evidently alarmed at the move ments of the Radical politicians in their respective localities. These journals, ignorantly or cor ruptly, have pursued a proper policy calculated to destroy their own party, and, after creating the ruins, are now trying to whistle down the tangible e0 ghost of the enemy that has appeared ' to wander through its old haunts. For our part, we have sanctioned no measure, advocated no policy save that which would directly or P remotely benefit our party. We con Al rider the principles of Democracy to st be essential to the happiness and l welfare of the citizens of Louisiana, 91 and we know them to be inseparable " from his constitutional liberty. Hence n we have stoutly res...
