By Proclamation of the President of th.United States Thursday next the 25th in t.. is set apart for fasting and prayer. It lia< been a custom from time immemorial among Christian nations, in times of national calamity, to set apart a day for prayer and humiliation before Almighty God, that the calamity or threatened danger may be averted. As a nation, the American people are guilty of innumerable sins, and they havejmtiy incurred and merited the displeasure of Heaven. This day should be religiously observed by every lover of the Union. The inexperienced general pructicioners,having neither opportunity nor time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with their pathology, commonly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an indiscriminate use of that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mercury.
