Tracy attended Weatern Military Academy and Union College, New York. Hia youthful ambition waa to be an army officer and he aerved aa an Inatructor during the war, when he waa a lieutenant. For a while he wai a film cutter at a major film company. However, Tracy admita that thia did not turn out very well. After the war he entered vaude- ville. He then turned to the legi- timate atage, appearing in Mount Vernon, Syracuie and Baltimore in atock. He alio waa in "Whiaper- inr Wirei" and "The Cat and the Canary" while on the road.
