it- Kage 8 - Mustang Round-up - The Sachse Mews - August 25, 2005 Offense examines tactics By Adam Boedeker Winning three games last season and losing arguably one of the best offensive players on the team, running back Josh Maldonado, to graduation doesn't seem like it would lend a great outlook on the 2005 season for the Sachse offense, but looks can be deceiving. The Mustangs return a quarterback, Josh Phillips, who passed for more than 1,000 yards last season as an inexperi- enced junior. They also have a trio of young, athletic running backs and a more athletic stable of receivers, offensive coordinator Kyle Sanders said. "I have some very high expectations for them," Sanders said. "I expect them to be the best in the district. "I think we have a quarterback who can make a difference and some wide receivers now, that when the defense makes a mistake, those will turn to touch- downs this year because we have more athleticism this year. Last year those were 20-yard gains because ...

August 25, 2005 - The Sachse News - Mustang Round-up - Page 13 Defense looking for opportunities By Adam Boedeker The outlook at Sachse's defensive workouts coming the 2005 season is one of opportunity. ^^The feelings are a result of only having three defensive players who have established themselves as contributors on the "Blue Shirts" squad, otherwise known as the Mustangs' starting defense. Coming into the season, one player, defensive tackle Lee Dasilva, is "head and shoulders above everyone," said defensive coordinator Josh McKiddy. The first-year defensive coach, who comes from SMU, where he was a graduate assistant coach, is installing a new 4-3 defense with a Cover 2 scheme. It is a more aggressive defensive approach than Sachse used in previ- ous seasons. Dasilva, a senior, who stands 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 265 pounds, has floored McKiddy with his overall athletic ability. "He's far and beyond the best defensive player we have," McKiddy said. "He has size, speed and qu...

Page 16 - Mustang Round-up - The Sachse Mews - August 25, 2005 Former Tech player, coach 'spreads' it on By Adam Boedeker If Sachse offensive coordinator Kyle Sanders has his way. Mustangs fans will have plenty to anticipate. After all, when Sanders was a graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech after his playing career, as a center, came to an end, he studied one of the most potent offenses in college football history. After playing three years for former coach Spike Dykes, who was a run-first coach, Tech coach Mike Leach's arrival in 2000 was a trying time. Sanders and his teammates had to adjust to a pass-happy offense, but it eventually came as second nature and now Sanders has brought a variation of Leach's spread offense to Sachse. "It's a variation of what (Leach) does," Sanders said. "Coach Leach's offense is really simple. It's built around making players." Sanders said his transition to the high school ranks in 2002 was initially a tough one. "In college you get to recruit t...

Coach looks for intangibles when selecting players August 25, 2005 - The Sachse Mews - Mustang Round-up - Page 17 continued from page 16 ^fason, in the Mustangs' first year at the varsity level, he made the move up to offen- sive coordinator. The delay in appointment is something for which Sanders is thankful. "I'm pretty glad I was not the offensive coordinator when I got here because it takes a while to adjust," he said. "I went from coaching 24-year-olds with (former Tech quarterback Kliff) Kingsbury, and some of the best players in the country, to here where we opened up with freshmen and sophomores, half of which had never played football before. "I think if I would've been offensive coordinator when I came, 1 would've been setting myself up for failure with unrealistic expectations." Sanders related his situation starting a new program from scratch to his time at Tech. He said it was hard getting athletes the first few years because the best ones weren't interested in being in...
