THE BEETROOT SUGAR INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 13 July 1883

THE BEETROOT SUGAR IN DUSTIRY. Tlit Beetroot Sugar Industry seemsl to be 'naking very rapid strides in the German Empire, to judge by the data coinmunalted to the German Reichr stag- by the' Miniqtor of Agriculiurd, Ilrre vos Encius. On the other. hand, the exporatation, " which in 1871-72 did not exceed 144;300 tons amounted, in 1881-82, to 317,582 tons, an increase...

How I Lost my Trunk. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 20 July 1883

In the summor of 185-, being possessed of a little surplus cash, and, as I was assured of a high order of musical talent, I was in duced to leave a rather lucrative mercantile position, to invest the capital and talent above. mentioned in a minstrel band then about starting, as I was informed, for an extensive tour through the Eastern States. The business was entirely new to me, but once having my ideas worked by the many visions of success and the bright prospect ahead so highly dilated upon by the enter prising manager (whom I shall here charac terlse as J.) I made up my mind that at last I had entered upon a field where success was certain, with little to do, and remunera tion ample. The " company" was, to say the least, a rather "motley crew" of six, who,I wsas sured; were men "well up" in the business, and all stars in their several lines. After numerous rehearstls at M-- Hall. which were deemed satisfaotory, the business ageistwent in advance and we were duly billed to appear a...
