MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 22 July 1826

MISCELLANY,: ORIGINAL AND SELECT.   The celebrated letters of Mr. Malachi   Malagrowther, alias Sir Walter Scott, on the currency of Scotland, which have appeared in the Edinburgh and London papers, are most amusing instances of declamation, and indicate the immense, literary powers of the writer. They advo- cate with irrefutable force and humour I a cause which has of itself scarce one   argument to support it. The wonderful genius, learning, and rich imagination of | this great author pervade, them in every part, and render them no less entertaining than similar passages of the Scotch novels, to which both in style, and matter they bear a close resemblance. Connected as we are with a Journal, however humble, we rejoice in the accession of this great luminary to enlighten the columns of the newspaper press already of such magni- tude in the literature of the day. Its growing interest and value are rapidly gaining it the ascendency over every &...

MELANCHOLY AND DISASTROUS SHIPWRECK. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 22 July 1826

MELANCHOLY AND DISASTROUS SHIPWRECK.   On the arrival of the Post from Launces- ton on Thursday, a sudden gloom was thrown over the Town by the distressing news of the total loss of the schooner Sally, which our Readers will recollect sailed lately from this port with goods and passengers belonging to the settlers who were about to fix themselves on the   banks of the Ringaroomy River. From the obliging communication of one of the party who escaped from the wreck, we are enabled to state the following particulars on the authenticity of which the Public may rely. " That unfortunate schooner says our Correspondent, was wrecked in the large bay opposite Waterhouse Island on the night of the 30th of June, and I am distressed to inform you with the loss of 13 souls. The scene was beyond any thing I can describe - each clinging to a mast or the rigging to save himself, while misery and despair presented themselves in every tremendous wave that came over   us.
