Powlett Express. PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. TELEPHONE NO. 8. FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1915. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 9 April 1915

H o fold t PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY.. TELEPHONE NO. 8. FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1915. THE Parliament of Victoria will assemble shortly, and it is now a fit and appropriate time to again launch the agitation for sale of coal from the State Mine to the public. The establishment of the State Mine was a heavy blow to the vested interests of inter-slate coal barons, who put up a bitter fight against it. For 40 years they had been powerful enough to re tard development of the Powlett, but the State Mine came and proved an unmistakeable success, in face oi'a variety of adverse cir cumstances. Unable to prevent the advent of the mine by a frontal attack, a flank movement was executed and an endeavour was made to paralyse the effi ciency of the State Coal Mines Act- by forbidding the management to sell coal to. the Victorian tax payers, whose money was invested in the "mine. No joint stock com pany would be guilty of such un businesslike procedure as to debar its shareholders from purchasing its produ...

In the married men's race Mr. F., by his speed, gave some of the onlookers quite a surprise. One very pleasing feature of the picnic was the number of grown up people that were present. Mr. Blair wishes to thank all the friends who helped to make the picnic t'se great success it un doubtedly was. NERVOUS PROSTRATION. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 9 April 1915

I NERVOUS PROSTRATION, i Dr. Thomas L. Kumbold, in a paper 011 this subject, attributes the nervous prostration commonly attributed to "overwork," to chronic nasal inflam mation, the most potent and frequent factor iu the production of which he asserts to bo the result of excess of al cohol, tobacco, and "colds" induced thereby. These practices, he says, in crease the congestion of the nasal mucous membrane, producing a ten dency to '"colds," causing vascular paresis, which, commencing at the peri phery, gradually travels to the brain vascular system, and the author holds that this disturbance of the cerebral circulation is the real reason of the irritability of temper, iuabilit}- to hold the mind continuously 011 a delinite sub ject. sleeplessness, forgetfulness, desire for change and excitement, accompan ied by physical exhaustion and loss of ambition, which are commonly attri buted by the physician to the cont-inu- ! ous application of the inind to business and professional dutie...

Inverloch. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 9 April 1915

InverlocH. The Easter season his been: very successful, a great many visi tors from Wonthaggi, Korumburra, Leongatha, and Melbourne spend ing a splendid holiday at the de lightful resort. ? For the past seven years endea vours have been made to move the Government in the direction of granting leases of the coal and mineral fields around Inverloch, but those interested in the develop ment and advancement of the dis trict have met with scanty en couragement. Scams of coal have been proved, but applications made by private persons for leases have not been granted. At such a pc^'d in our history when ever}' effort should be put forth to en courage Australian enterprise and industry, restrictions on granting leases should be removed, or the Government itself should under take the working of the coal seams There will certainly be no progress made while a " dog-in the manger'" policy is followed The coal seams should be worked, and it does not matter very much in the interest of the public...
