IRELAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 16 December 1848

IRELAND. JTrom the Watchman, August 3rd. The practical working of the incentives to assassination so freely thrown out by the Felou Press, has a significant illustra- tion in the following cowardly and atroci- ous outrage : ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A POLICEMAN. A diabolical attempt at assassination was made between one and two.o'clock on "Wed- nesday morning. Constable John Byrne was on his beat in South Great George street, Dublin, when he perceived three young men approaching him, whose names were afterwards ascertained to be Michael Moran, John Moran, and John M'Cor mack, one of whom (Michael Moran) was talking loudly with a pistol in his hand. The constable went np to li im and said " Sir, may I ask if you have a license to carry arms ?" To this a coarse reply was given. The constable was about arresting Michael Moran, who pointed the pistol at him, and told him to stand back. The constable grasped the pistol, and after a short struggle wrested it from him. Mo- ran, the moment he let...

W. A. Mining Company. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 16 December 1848

W. A. Mining Company* The meeting of the Shareholders in this Arso ciation on Wednesday last, was well attended, al- though but few others than those resident in Perth were present. Mr. Samson being called to the chair, read the advertisement calling the meeting and stating its purposes ; he felt satisfied that if tlie proceedings at the meetings of the company wore conducted in a more orderly manner and conciliating spirit than prevailed at the last, which he regretted had boen taken notice of and severely commented on by a portion of the public presB, things would go on more pleasantly and the business for which they were assembled would be more efficiently tran- sacted. He could assure them that he would en- deavor that every person who wished to address tlie meeting should be heard without interruption, and he hoped that order and regularity would cha- racterise their proceedings. The committee had anxiously considered the subject they were assem- bled to discuss, and had endeav...

An Englishman on the Throne of France. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 16 December 1848

An Englishman on tlie Throne of France. The Journal de l'Arrondissement du Ha- vre gives, under the above head, a strange story connected with the revolution. The paper in question states that in an old Al- manac of the year 1799, there appears, un- der the head 'Prophecies of Nostradamus,' the following prediction.-In the course of the succeeding century great changes will occur, prodigious revolutions, glorious vic- tories, terrible misfortunes. At the ap Eroach of the year 1850 the throne, after aving been occupied by an Englishman, will be overthrown. This will be the new epoch of the republic." It appears that the celebrated astrologer who penned the above prediction has read the stars aright, at least if the story related may be depended upon. It was stated, that on the 24th February, Colonel Wells, an English officer, who, with his family, had apartments in the Hotel Meurice ni 'the neighborhood of the Tuilleries, who was recovering from a severe attack of brain fever, was vi...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1848. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 16 December 1848

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL " Vox populi, vox Dei." Saturday, December 16, 1848. By the Ranee we have only four days   later English intelligence, she having left, on the 8th August. Another vessel, name unknown, was to be immediately placed on the berth for this colony, and may be ex- pected to arrive in the beginning of Febru- ary next. Two Sisters of the Order of Mercv em- barked on board the Ranee, but one being taken ill while the vessel was in the Chan- nel, was obliged to be landed. We regret to report that a private letter received bv this vessel gives but a poor ac- count of the prospects of a home trade for our timber, arising in a great measure from a want of proper care and knowledge on our own parts. The gentleman receiving this letter had one by the George, con- taining an order to commence cutting on a private account, but the one now received countermands that order. The reason given for such a course is, that the Admi- ralty had sent to the dockyards for a ...
