INTEREST1NG HOLY WEEK SERMON. ON Tuesday in the Holy Week the Rev. F. H. Gibbs. preached in St. Mary's (Anglican).on the "Betrayal of Christ." After reviewing the circumstances in connectio- with Judas-Iscariot's bargain with Jewish priests to betray his Saviour io-thirtyptreces of silver, and- the trai tor's action in the garden of Gethsemene. IMr. Gibbs dwelt on the enormity of Judas's sin, and the utter want .of love and reverence le must have had for his Lord. It could hardly be understood how the backsliding and finally aban doned desciple could experience benefits and Divine friendship of, the three years of Christ's ministry, and yet be so im pervious to the best of influence as to persist in carrying out his terribly base and blasphemous transaction. "Not even," Mr. Gibbs went on to say, "the momentary glimpse of the na ture of his action as. seen -through an other person's eyes, which the Saviour's words must have afforded him, could deter him from completing his crime. And...

THE DUTIES OF HONORARY JUSTICES. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 10 April 1896

THE DUTIES OF HONORAiRY JUSTICES. IT is quite possible that the present pre judice against honorary justices, in consequence of the revelations and re commendations of the Loraer Board, may be pushed too far, and the colony comnmitted to a svstein of expenditure in connection with tilFfl~rinistrtionif justice in courts oflietty sessions which will prove a heavy burden on the shoulders of the taxpayers. According to the Australian Law Times of the 31st March "honorary justices should "be prohibited from adjudicating on all "urbani-ud suburbanu-areas . . . the ' work of the petty courts in centres of ' population, and their immediate sur " roundings--being-perfoned- solely- by ' stipendiary magistrates." In such "centres of population " as ]Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Seymour, and Sale, very likely one P.M. for the district of which they are the chief towns would suffice, but in and aroundthe metropolis it would be impossible for the city court to take the charge and crime lists from ...

CORRESPONDENCE. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 10 April 1896

CORRESPONDENCE. WI'e do not hold -orselces responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. THE STANDARDIZATION OF LOCOMOTIVES. (To the Editor.) TuE position of general manager to the Victorian Railways is now open to appli cants from' the four winds of heaven, and the Government, seeing that the salary will, no doubt, be handsome, may expect a number of candidates for the position. The Press is pretty well tired of writing, and the public are well nigh surfeited of hearing of the blots-financial and otherwise--of the Victorian Railway Department; but there is a feature in cnnection with it that any gentleman who is appointed to control it will have to face and satisfactorily settle. In allude to the abolition of the present mixed types of engines in the running sheds, and the desirability of a system of standardization being brought about. At present the following makers and their " tarn-outs" are represented-England & Co., B]eyer, Peacock & Co., Slaughter, Gruni...
