THE NESBITT PROHIBITION CASE. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 15 July 1874

THE NESBITT PROHIBITION CASE. Tlio opinions of Judges Ilargravo and Faucett, in this case, will interest many of our readers: — Mr Justice Hargrave said that a cancella tion by tho Minister for Lands had not any effect upon a free selection legally taken up and held ; and the J ustices m holding that the cancellation applied to the selection hud made an egregious mistake. With regard to tho reserve, also, he was of opinion. thftt tlio applicants title was good. The reserve con sisted of some 10,000 acres j and after the Crown had received a free selector's money it must be assumed, if a small portion of his selection fell upon a reserve, that small slip of land was not wanted : and the Cr'owii should bo stopped both in law and in equity from setting a title upon it, and treating the selector as a trespasser. The selector Lad been allowed to acquire a good title as against everybody. At any rate Nesbitt had an arguable title, which the magistrates had no jurisdiction over ; and no co...

DIPHTHERIA. TO THE EDIOR OF THE HERALD. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 15 July 1874

DIPHTIIERTA ? TO THE EDIOIl OF THE IIEIlAr.n. .,l Sin,-— B chevjiig that too ' much inforrrfatfon about that fell destroyer,' diphtheria, cannot be given, ia order to warn parents of its approach, I am induced to publish my recent experience in connection with that disease. A few weeks since, my son, a well-grown strong:, and healthy boy of six years, complained of sore ness in the throat. A duly qualified medical man was at once called in, and pronounced the ease to be one of simple ulceration of the tomtts nmi w Alter several days treatmeut, during which time he was kept m one room, but out of bed during* the day time, his throat was much better, the inflammation apparently gone, and he was pronounced to be getting 'all right and, under medical authority, allowed to ramble about the house at will. Suddenly, symptons of pneumonia appeared, and des pite a consultation of doctors, he was dead in. a few hours During the period of his illness (the doctor not having 1 directed otherwise...

DIPTHEHERIA, VEL OIDIUM ALBICANS. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 15 July 1874

DIPTHEIIEniA, VEL OIDIUM ALBICANS. As a good ileal has uceiv said from time to time in the public papers of diphtheria, in different parts of the colony, ot a very fatal character, I am inclined to think oidiiim alhieaus mav sometimes lie mistaken for that dis ease, especially if the patient is not seen for the first two or three days. It is easy to diagnose diphtheria, if seen in the first stage : the put-pie, swollen, nnd glazed np pcaranee of the fauces, and, generally, tile great depres sion of the patient points to it : but, if two or three davs have elapsed, I think it is possible to confound the fibrinous exudation with the fungus iu oidiuni albicans. If albumen is found in the urine, wc may coucludc that the case is diphtheria; but, fortunntely, it does not matter, as the same treatment will do in either case; and I believe they are equally infectious nnd fatal if left without treatment, and, beyond a certitin point, no treat ment will be available. In either case I put the ...

MELBOURNE. (f noil OUR OWN COllIlESI'ONDENr.) ?.duly 11,1874. Parliament met on Tuesday night, having been adjourned from the previous Tuesday, but again adjourned after hearing a few questions answered, and notices of motion made. The Chief Secretary has not -yet been able to take his seat, as his medical advisers say he'would thereby endanger his recovery. To add to the detention in .dis cussing tho business of the country, I am sorry to ' report tho death of Mr W. M.: Pope, one of tho members for Grenville, to' mark their appreciation of whose loss, and' out of respect to to tho memory of the dead. the House again adjourned to Tuesday night, when it is hoped that business will be steadily resumed. In the meantime the Legislative Council arc moving in the direc-: tion of reforming themselves. A motion oft the lion. Mr A. Beckett to that effect having been made in the House. I should say that they are rather too late in their movement^,' and they may so find it ere long time passes...

SYDNEY. July 10th, 1874 I [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 15 July 1874

SYDNEY. (FR03I OUH OWN CORRESPONDENT.) July 10th, 1874 Iho most important movement of the week in Sydney has been a meeting of the shipowners and others interested in ship ping, to seek the interposition of the British Parliament to relievo them from tho unjust and hurtful effect of tho Kidnapping' Act of 1872. This act, it will bo remembered, was passed to enable tho naval force of her Ma jests in the Pacific to put down tho infamous traffic in Polynesian slaves.. The history of the Carl, and other slavo vessels, will not be soon forgotten ; and in view of tho atro cities perpetrated by those mcnstealors, the people of Australia, as well as those of the mother country, will doubtless sustain by public opinion tho resolution of tho British Parliament to suppress all attempts to con tinue or reviv® the practice. But the act is so worded' as to involve tho punishment of thoso who have no part iu tho crime. In order to ensuro tho conviction of menstealers, it is enacted that if there a...
