NEWS OF THE WORLD NEW LINER [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 30 January 1947

NEWS OF THE WORLD A special feature by S. E. CURITY NEW LINER As yet unnamed, and known on the I Clyde as "635," ls a new Cunarder, the largest ocean liner at present under construction in Britain. Sister ship to the new Mauretania, the '635' is designed for service on the North ilantic route. She will be of about 30,000 tons gross and just over. 700 feet from bows to stern. A striking feature of her design W ; that her bows are modelled on the lines I of the famous old Clipper sailing ships, those graceful vessels which raced nearly a hundred years ago in the tea trade from Ceylon. When she sails she will be a complete township, in which travellers will live at luxury levels while crossing the At- lantic at a speed of 23 knots. , * * * I TURTLE RACES Turtle races have again become the fashion on Queensland beaches. At Mooloolabah, where the big shark fishing takes place, turtles come up on the beacn to lay their eggs at night, and are caught and kept for turtle races, with lady Joc...

GARDEN NOTES PREPARE FOR POPPIES AND STOCKS [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 30 January 1947

GARDEN NOTES By 'EVERGREEN' PREPARE FOR POPPIES AND STOCKS Poppies are one of the most popular flowers grown in Australian gardens, and I strongly recommend them. For the first sowings, plant seeds now. They will then bloom in the winter and early spring. Iceland Pcppies are particularly suited for table and house decoration, and if the stems are burnt as soon as they are gathered they will last many days in water. To raise Poppies in January and Feb- ruary, they must oe sown in cool, shad- ed seed beds. Mix a little sand when sowing seed as this makes the task much easier as the seed is exceptoinally fine. When planting out make sure the crown of the seedling is above the ground and they you should have no losses. Very I often this is overlooked and the plant I is smothered. There are some very fine specimens : of Poppies, recent improvements to the I shades resulting in some very soothing Pinks, Saunons, etc. I have a beautiful mixture of glorious shades of Iceland j Poppy, hand-m...
