CURRENT JOTTINGS [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 5 March 1915

CURRENT JOTTINGS In a reply to an address of con gratulat on on the late victory in ?HJast Prussia the Kaiser expresses ' his confidence in the triumph of the determined will of poets, thinkers, and people, , who were united as a nation in arms. Nothing about the Deity, ! The Raiser puts his confid ence now in things ol the earth, ' tearthy. It is bad policy to swop horses while crossing a stream. When we consider that Germany's oversea trade totted up to seven hundred millions a year and that ii is now cut off. we get an idea of how difficult a feat it must be for . the Kaiser to talt rationally or his subjects to maintain a smile. The Sultan was cabled, since the attach on the forts, to be packing up ; 1 would not be surprised to hear that the Kaiser's travelling Outfit was toeing overhauled. A German journal, the 'Hamburg- er Fremdenhlatt,1' contrasts the bat tlesong of the British 'Tipperary with the classic German ' Der Wacht am Rhein,' and ?''' Deutschland^ Uber Alles,' and dr...

Grecian Architecture [Newspaper Article] — South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus — 5 March 1915

Grecian Architecture 1 On. Friday evening last Mi\ James. Nangle^ F.I.A.,, superintendent of Technical Education, gave an expo sition, under auspices of the Work, ers' Tutorial Class, Wollongong, on the subject of Greek Architecture. Mr. W. V. Brown, B.A., presided. Mr. N angle said t the Gree s had attained to a higher perfection in color and form in art than had any other people. No other people had exercised such an influence on Art. Their architecture was superior to that of any other people. There were three orders of Greek architec ture, the Doric, the Ionic, and the Corinthian, and beyond them there was nothing more. The Doric was believed to be an imitation of a primitive structure of timber; the Ionic ,was adapted from Egyptian | and 'Persian types. Sketches were made by Mr. Ranglo of types of : these orders. Egyptian and Persian styles of architecture were barbaric, in the Grecian was attained refined art. A good example of Ionic archi tecture in Sydney was Che portico of ...
