PLANNING A MURDER. A DRAMATIC CONFESSION. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 2 October 1914

PLANNING A MURDER. A DRAMATIC CONFESSION. It is very seldom that a London Police Court listens to a cool-and col lected confession of murder such as that recited at West Ham by Evan Davies, 59, a stonemason, of Hey worth Road, Stratford, who is accused of killing his wife, Sarah Jane Davies, 58, by shooting her. In this confession he declared that after the crime he went,' armed with -a revolver, in search of a man he - al !-g d to havo been his :wife's lover, but failed to find him., On thle moan ing of the tragedy, accused said, his wife asked him if he was going to work, and when he rmiid, "No; my hands don't feel. very well," she re plied, "You -are a fraud. Get up; I can't do anything while you are in the house." He continued : "I said nothing to her, but I thought-it over and said to myself, 'I'll' 'nake it right for you when I do get up.' - That meant that I would do away with her and her lover. I stopped with her some half hour .thinking how I could best find the man Scrmven...

BUTTER-MILK FOR CALVES. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 2 October 1914

BUTTER-MILK FOR CALVES. "Noticing a reference to this ques tion," a correspondent .writes, "and as we have had. some experience feeding butter milk will tell ypu how :we use it. We have raised two good heif3r calves on it, and the dairy maid who told us about it said she had raised fifteen, all on butter milk. We ti:ok .the calf away from the cow when it was three days old, and taught ii to drink from a bucket. Fed it on the whole milk fresh from the cow until it was twelve days old. We began to churn then, changed to fresh butter milk, using about the same amount as we did of the sweet milk and puttiag in enough water to make it about as warm as fresh milk. If the calf has scours, `as' the first we raised did some times, we feed a handful of flour in a pint or two of water. "When the calf was a month old we gave it a little wheat, bran and maize meal in the bucket after feed iig; later gave some lucerne hay. Did not use much hay as both calves had good grazing. We fed the milk unti...

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 2 October 1914

WOi4EN'S INTERESTS. (By '"Ambrosine.") it is a \e.Sy goad test of suceos in dres?.ing to revIltw one's clothes as they all hang together. Strip thcus of their nice white, or tlllntz, ?bags, look at them as they hang shoulder to shoulder, and judge whether the effect he harmonious. If the dresses ap .pear to sulk or to .look annoyed, irri tated, - and even a;gry at the mere presence of: each other, then there is something wrong. This happens wuenl there is any attempt at mixing the classes. All dresses, no matter hobw simple or how grand, should be of the same class; then the woman who wear's them presents a perfectly even, harmonious appearance to the world. A morning tailor-made should speak -the same jargon as a '"dess" tailor made; a simple dinner frock should be on. intimate terms with the finest court gown ever made when they have to live in the same wardrobe. But a simple morning tailor-made ?will feel dreadfully out of place if it is sudden ly asked to gossip with an. afterno...

THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XIX. STOP. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 2 October 1914

------ THE MASTER PASSION. (CHATL?'ER XIX. STOP. There was a long train of carriages blocking the way, ror the English are a musi-loving people, and their fav orite prima donna never failed to fill 'the house. 'The opera had already be gun 'when Mrs. Luval and the Mar quis of Belgrave arrived at Covrent Uarden. Ida, wrapped in a long white cloak trimmed with marabout, looked line a swan as .she sailed through the crowd into the lobby. A sol:tary diamona star glittered amongst her soft brown curls, and she carried her head like a queen. Many eyes followed her graceful figure with admiration, some with a faint recognition, wondering -where they had. seen it before; others with frank delight, as at the first. sight of a thing of beauty. No delight, but grave disapprobation, mixed with a slight surprise, in one pair of dark eyes, as Captain Beresford -stepped` in front of her. "Mrs. Duval l" "Yes," with a slight blush whioh seemed to herself quite unreasonable. "Lord Belgrave is with me...
