NORTHERN SCULPTOR DEVELOPMENT OF GENIUS [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 27 February 1914

NORTHERN SCULPTOR development ok genius The works of one of the greatest Scandinavian sculptors is still almost unrecognised in this country, says John HI vers in the "World's "NVork." Stephan Binding is not a young man. His life's work is behind him. Ho Is famous in Scandinavia, in Gennnay, and in France, and waits only to be appreciated by the English-speaking world. Born in 1S-16, he has alroad}' celebrated his sixty-seventh birthday. His native place is Drontheim, on the north coast of Norway. It was at the age of twenty-six— when most young artists have already mastered the tcchnlquo of their art and are already well on the road to suc cess or failure—that his eyes were first opened to the great gift, nature had bestowed upon him. For a short time he worked in his father's house, but, finding little or no facilities for studying in his native euuntry, he went in 1S71 to Herlln. where he \v;ij; iceelved as a pupil Into the studio of Professor Albert "Wolff— the only master he ev...

THROUGH THE TELESCOPE MOON'S DISTANCE MEASURED. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 27 February 1914

THROUGH THE TELESCOPE MOON'S DISTANCE MEASURED. A learned professor, with nine letters after his name has become a small hoys' hero (says "The Daily Mail," of December 31). Professor H. H. Turner, D.Sc., D.C.L., F.R.S., Savilian Professor of Astronomy in the Unversity of Oxford, who yester day delivered his? second lecture at the Royal Institution, London, has caught the imagination of the small boy like a Jules Verne or a Stevenson. He has overcome the llrmly rooted conviction of the young that all real professors must be dry, elderly, and grim, and that a lecture is a dull sort of thing. Professor Turner possesses the geni ality of a benevolent uncle. Ho under stands just what appeals to small boys and disguises his science in a delightful "make tip." Yesterday ho was sur rounded by balloons, aeroplanes, kites, telescopes, and continuing his subject, "A Voyage in Space," he took his audi ence up towards the moon, which is .40,000 miles away. But how do we know the moon is this dis...

PORT ALBERT RIFLE RANGE. OPENED LAST SATURDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 27 February 1914

PORT ALBERT RIFLE RANGE. OPENED LAST SATURDAY. The new rifle range was opened last Saturday under most favorable circum- stances—a nice fine day and a good muster of riflemen present. Captain Holden made a few well chosen re- marks before declaring the range open, and invited Mrs. Hollingsworth, wife of the local captain, to fire the first shot. She smilingly complied, and scored a bull's-eye, which was deser- vedly applauded. Thirty members then fired in turn, the most of them hand- ling a rifle for the first time. The visiting riflemen expressed themselves pleased with the performances put up by some of the members. Only 10 misses were recorded for the day's shooting. The club is lucky in having such a captain as Mr. Hollingsworth, for he tries hard with all the beginners to initiate them in the mysteries of rifle shooting. The new club has apparently come to stay, and members are promis- ing great things for the future. Messrs. Holden, G. Ferguson and R. Hollings- worth tied for ...

The Yarratn Hospital committee mado n good suggestion to (lie board of guardiaus of the Church of England in respect to the block on tlie east sido of Coumiorcial-st. Between it and the. hospit il site is a right-of-way, and the proposal was made to include this in the church property provided a right of-way were made on the block adjoin ing Sir Growse's property, where ex ists a natural watercourse. The board on Monday evening favored the pro posal, which ill to be submitted to the bishop for consideration. The altera tion will certainly enhance the value of the church property. We have authority for stating that the bush lires have not destroyed any part of the beautiful Tarra Valley scenery, from tlx; green timber north ward. The residents, who are. natur ally very proud of their place as a pleasure resort, wore annoyed at the rumors afloat. They ...
