MOTOR NOTES THE CARE OF TYRES AND TUBES. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

I,.-,»»-»».-»»-»ll-»»-)!» > i ?»?-.»»-?»»»??-I«""- HB«-?» MOTOR NOTES THE CARE OF TYRES AND TUBES. Do we ever think, as we run along a nice stretch ot' road in a good car, how speed and comfort in cars would be possible with out pneumatic tyres and tubes? This article is written to be of use to those owners of cars, etc., who have not had much experience, and are desirous of obtaining the best mile age possible out of their tyres, for it is only by judicious and intelligent treatment we get their value. There are two kinds of tyres-balloon and high pressure-made of almost the same mate rials, namely, fabric or cord and rubber. The fabric is a material similar to duck; the cord is similar thread, but coarser, and not woven. Each layer of cord is composed of a number of these coarse threads lying side by side very closely across the tyre from bead to bead at a slight angle. The next layer is similar, only each thread of it lies approximately at right-angles to the thread of the pre...

FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN RULES. COMBINED TEAM'S FINE DISPLAY IN SYDNEY. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN RULES. COMBINED TEAM'S FINE DISPLAY IN SYDNEY. Judging by the unanimous opinion of the Sydney newspaper critics, tiie combined team representing Canberra, though defeated by Sydney on September 38, was far from dis graced, and has ensured a warm welcome for future representatives amongst enthusiasts in the seaside city. Jt was asserted prior to th » match that the Sydney team" was a stronger combination than that sent against Victoria, while that fielded by Canberra underwent several alterations from the original selection, and was consequently, on paper at least, not as strong as it might have been. The absence of Adams and Lind ley, to mention two, was particularly unfor tunate, as the development of the game showed the need of the former's all-round skill, and the latter's position play and accurate stab kicking,. On the other hand, particularly as his selection, even as a reserve, was criticised in this column last month, it is pleasing to be able to congratu...

GOLF THE STANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

GOLF THE STANCE. (By J. A. Irving.) Before- we tackle some of the really vital things in golf, it is just as well to become familiar with those parts of the game that <lo not matter tremendously. Most beginners at golf are lacking in a sense of proportion; they fail to see the difference between Ihe important and unimportant movements, and it often takes some time for them to develop this. They make much faster progress as soon as they do, and then devote their at tention to the vital things. The other issue J spoke of-the essentials of the grip. Now comes the stance-the position of the feet at the moment you are ready to drive the bal'. Tf the truth of the matter is known, the par ticular kind of stance is non-essential. You will play good golf, whatever the position of your feet, as long as your style is not too extreme. Strange words. The reader, like most of his golfing kind, has always looked upon his stance as of vital importance. Like the grip, the stance is the sl...

BOWLS CLUB FORMED AT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

BOWLS CLUB FORMED AT CANBERRA. A meeting was held at Hotel Canberra for purpose of forming a Bowling Club in Can berra. There was a fair attendance, and Mr. C. P. Francis was elected to the chair. Apolo gies were received from Sir John Harrison, Messrs. Brownless and Lomjfhrey. The Chairman explained that Sir John Har rison was unable to be present, but had under- . taken to communicate with the Ashfield Bowls Club and obtain a copy of that body's rules, which would materially assist in the forma tion of a local club. At the same time Sir 'John Harrison had intimated the advisability of a preliminary meeting before forming a club. Mr. J. H. Pike moved that a Bowling Club be formed in Canberra. Mr. Bruce seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously. Mr. J. H. Honeysett, Social Service Offi cer, intimated that the Federal Capital Com mission would consider favourably the forma tion of a Canberra Bowling Club, and that a financial membership of, say, £3/5/- per annum would co...

SOME VEGETABLE GROWING RECORDS [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

SOME VEGETABLE GROW ING RECORDS (By "The Gleaner.") Alas! to seek the bubble reputation at the point of a pen. Kipling says, " There may be silver in the blue-black: all I know of is the iron and the gall. ' ' I can endorse his remarks. Such is fame, an airy nothing. To day I had the. honour to, be waited on by a deputation with the request that I refrain from twisting the-ahem-lamb's tail, or, in other words, that I refrain from criticising my fellow-men. 1 can only reply that my criticism is helpful and constructive, and must remind them that "the liberty of the press and the liberty of the people must stand or fall together." But now that a strike has struck the camp it may be a good time to talk of cabbages. There are flats alongâthe river bank just aching to be put to some real use to help re duce the cost of living. Why not start a cab base growing competition? I once put up a record for growing cabbages, used to have to back the dray under them before I cut them off the stalk...

HOME NOTES [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 October 1926

HOME NOTES (By "Mona.") Lremons are plentiful ami cheap at the pre sent time, but once the hot weather com mences and there is more demand, the prices will soar again, A very excellent lemon syrup, and one which will keep well, is made by the following method. I have kept this syrup for twelve months, and at the end of that time it has been perfectly good. LEMON SYRUP.-1 pint lemon juice with the seeds strained out; 1 pint water; 31b. sugar and the white of one fresh egg. Method: Boil the sugar, water and white of egg (beaten to a froth), together for ten minutes, then add the juice of lemon; bring to boiling point and boil again for ten minutes; strain, cool, and bottle; cork and seal securely with wax. If only small quan tities are likely to be used at a time, it is more satisfactory to put it np' in small bottles, as once it is opened it - will not keep indefinitely. /Vi SULTANA LOAF-Two cupfuls self-rais ing flour, £ cupful sugar, \ cupful sultanas, pinch of sait, 1 egg, \ cup o...
