POLITICAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

. POLITICAL. Mr. J.- Cook, deputy-leader of the Opposition, as a citizen and clector'of the State, strongly resents hnstv treatment of so important a matter as the Federal Capital. It is the fashion to blame the Victorians for all the trouble, he adds, but that is unfair, since if blame attaches to anyone it is to the representatives of our own Slate lirst. « «? s- Speaking about the Li-|tior Bill on Saturday Canon Boyce, presi dent of the' Alliance, said that it was the greatest measure of social reform ever passed by this State. Further, it was the most advanced law dealing with the liquor question in Australia, and needed little alteration to give all that was re quired. -s -s ?* There can be no doubt that the protectionists are going to bring their policy to the front at the next election. In Queensland the mat ter is being taken up enthusias tically. At' Maryborough last week a meeting was held and a protec tion league formed. The object as si:)tod. was 'to make protection the ...

CLOSE SEASON FOR. MS.P. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

CLOSE SEASON FOR. MS-P. The close of the session in tli is State makes the following letter, published in tho Adelaide 'Ad- vertiser,' last week, of interest : — 'Although the State Parliamentary session is noarina its close, it lias been suggested that before the pro rogation a bill should be introduced to create a close season for Ms.P. It might be cited as 'The Close Season for Ms.P. Act.' The defi nition clause should set out that 'M.P.' shall mean any' member of the Parliament of South Australia; 'Wily Constituent,' every person whose name appears on the elec toral roll for the House of Assem bly ; 'Close season' to include: — (1) The show week of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural So ciety ; (2) all Sunda}*s and public holidays ; (3) the first week in each mouth after the M.P. receive* his Parliamentary screw ; and (4) such other times as the Governor may proclaim to bo close seasons; and 'Yabber yabber Shop' to mean the Parliament House of South Australia and the precin...

Carruthers and the Federal Capital [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

Canutes and the Federal Capital Di'isixg 'the light of the J3I11' the question of the locale of the Fede ral capital 'occupied anything but a foremost position in the re markably warm campaign ior and Il^aiUM' LUC LLUIVCUUUUS UUUl Constitution. ?'Even' then, in New South Wales, excepting with a certain section in Sydney, the question never looked like win ning 'a place' among the conten tious clauses of the Bill. There always appeared to be a sort of tacit understanding that on the grandmother's State would be con ferred the honor of having the federal capital, and the opinion was generally held that had not Reid at the Premiers' Conference insisted upon N.S.W. being named in the bond Sydney would have been made the capital. As it is the Constitution provides that 'the Parliament shall sit at Melbourne until if meet at the seat of Go vernment.' And as it doesn't appear as though the Parliament will 'meet at the seat' for many years, and if there be any points in having the Parliamen...

Tanja Church of England Concert. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

Tanja Church of England Concert, The concert promoted at Tanjn in aid of the Church of England building fund was hold in the local hall on Wednesday night. The night was beautifully line, conse - quently the residents turned, out well to support the deserving object for which the concert was hold. The stage was' provided with tem porary wings for the accommoda tion of the singers and the charac ters in the farce. Canon Martin occupied the chair and announced each item. The programme opened with the pianoforte solo, 'Irish Airs,' by Tanja's favorite instru mentalist, Miss M. Kelly. The comic song, 'The Mystery of a Hansom Cab,' by Mr. F. JBailey, as was only to be expected, received vigorous applause. Miss Myra Evans is the possessor of a sweet 'and attractive voice, and her con tribution 'Island of Dreams' was one of the -most pleasing items of the evening. Mr. F. Robinson sang 'Tlie Spanish Cavalier' confidently, and was followed by Mr. W. A. Kelly and Miss M. Kelly in the vocal du...

Nazaretto Convent Annual Entertainment. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

Nazaretto Convent Annual Entertainment. The annual entertainment and distribution o.f prizes in connection with the Nazarotto Convent was held in St. Patrick's Hall on Wednesday night. There was a crowded house, chairs being taken almostup to the stage. The people at the back wore at a disadvantage owing to the chatter of groups of youngsters which precluded all possibility of hearing speakers on tho stage, St. Patrick's Hall was 'hardly largo enough to comfortably accommodate those who had at tended to hear the entertainment. But the staging of the sketch, 'Suit for Libel,' and tho drama, 'The Emperor's Slave,' could hardly bo improved upon, while tho pianos for the trios were disposed of along the wall and took up tho least possible space. The programme was a lengthy one, and each item was put on promptly: and without delay, the stage-management being excellent. From the time the curtain rose until the final scene the entertainment continued with out' intermission, and two and a h...

In every centre of the Qucan beyan electorate, the utmost indig nation is expressed because of the present political situation, and sur prise is expressed — especially by members of the Reform party — that Mr. Carruthers should have refrained from taking definite action, in view of the jury's verdict against the sitting member, Alan Major Millard.

TOWAMBA. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 16 December 1905

TOWAMBA. We have been enjoying some beautiful weather for the past fort night, sunshine aud showers alter nating; and although we were not faring too badly, this change has been much appreciated. The fair sex are still in charge or the cricket pitch. Lower Towamba and Towamba ladies played a return match on the former's ground on Saturday last. Of course, where the ladies are, the boys are sure to be, consequently their was a good gathering and a very enjoyable day was spent. The visitors, who were entertained by the home team at an excellent dinner provided by Mrs. Kennedy, won the game by about 40 runs. By the way, our bonny lassies apparently mean to outdo the brethern who at one time so eagerly defended the stumps. Seemingly, we have turned some what topsy-turvy, and we don't know whether it is woman's fran chise that brings this about; but the ladies have to some extent taken the men's place in the cricket field, and I venture to think were it not for our few enthusiasts who wo...
