GIGANTIC GUNS. [Newspaper Article] — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell Citizen — 14 August 1914

GIGANTIC GUNS. America has chosen a new 14in. gun, which weighs fifty tons, apart from the carriage, for coast defence. 1 The 12in. weapon is good for only seventy shots, whereas the new gun will stand nearly 250 beforeit is borne to the "junk-pile." The projectile, which weighs 1,660 lb: and is 65in. long, is O per ..cent. greater than that of the 12in. "filling," and the bigger weapon has 80 per cent. longer range. The only disadvantage is that the trajectory is more curved, and that the projec tile has slightly less velocity. ° The carriage complete weighs 286 tons. It is of a new style, too, and was just as much under test as ;.the gun itself. ;i-.The weight of all parts of the gun `that move is 262 tons, and the wi?ighit of all.recoiling parts is 160 tons. After the projectile has been ram med home, four bags of smokeless powder, each weighing 851b., are :tucked snugly at the back of it, the breech is fastened, and then woe Sbetide anything that .gets in the • way. -Eachi shot ...

Dropped On by Accident. [Newspaper Article] — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell Citizen — 14 August 1914

:Dropped On by Accident. Some of the moat celebrated dis coveries in the world of science and art have been the result of a happy accident. The worker, striv ing earnestly for one thing, finds thalt, while failing in his original u i iest, he has obtained another and far lmore wonderful one. The discovery of steam was: one Sof these "happenings," as we -all kioo. Tihe boy Watt, always -.thoughful 'and planning, sat one day by his mother's kitchen fire. 'Ihere was 'the tea-kettle swinging fi'om its hook, and as the water grew hot, it began to boil, anti the steam- violently lifted the kettle lid.. As:.it rose and fell, and the boy's eyes followed the motion, his brain was fired with the thought, "If this smiall puff of steamn can more the -iron lid, whly should not a larger amiount move a larger object ?" and the whole subject of steam naviga tion was there in a nutshell. The quick wit of a woman dis covered the strange force now known as galvanism. The wife of .a cele brated savant,...

MEASURE YOUR THUMB. [Newspaper Article] — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell Citizen — 14 August 1914

M.EASURUB YOUR 'IT'M1MB. The thumb confesses the man; ne nan is clever enough to deceive it. It Jas been divided into three parts, typi :ying the three qualities that master the vorld-will, logic, and love. The first ,r nail phalange, signifies will; the second, logic; the third, which is the soundary of the Mount of Venus, love. When the thumb is unequally dove !oped and the first phalange is extreme :y long, it is neither love nor logic that loverns the individual, but merely sheer rill If the middle phalange be much onger than the first reason predomij. .tes; yet the man may not have the .ower to will himself to do that which uis reason dictates. When the third phalange is long and .ho thumb is short, man is revealed as •le slave-of the senses, guided neither •y will nor reason. O If the thumb is supple-jointed, the in ividual is easy-going, spendthrift, care less of time, money, energy, oppor tunity, and all things. If it be firm-jointed, he is cautions, ratchful, keen, diplomat...
