Maying Learning Attractive. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

Maying Learning Attractive. A parent or a teacher has a duty not only to teach every child under his charge, but to make his teaching attractive to the child. The child ought, it is true, to learn whether it likes to learn or not ; but his teacher ought to see to it the child does find learning a pleas ing task. That is one thing the teacher is set to. Mr. Zarigwifl, in his admirable article on '' Early Jewish Education,' says of the Jewish teachers of earlier days and later : ' In the Middle Ages many a poetic, not to say palatable, ceremony marked the initiation of the child into school life, and he sucked the alphabet of holy knowledge off a slate smeared with honey.' There is a gain in smearing a siate with honey rather than with wormwood or vinegar, if a child has to lick its surface.; yet there are parents and teachers who seem to prefer to give the unpalatable dose, because the pupil has a duty to learn and must be made to realizethis. It is hard enough at the best for a chil...

Suggestions for the Day of Atonement. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

Suggestions for % Day of Atonement. By Oswald John Simon. frlT is curious, and perhaps suggestive, to note the different ways in which the Day of Atone ment appeals to persons of varied habits and of diverse temperaments. One may assume the truth of the assertion that the vast majority of every Jewish community is more or less affected by the recurrence of the Atonement celebration. In numerous degrees, and with minute variations of observance, the Day of Atonement is regarded by quite the over whelming majority of persons of Jewish birth, or to put the case conversely, it is only an insignificant minority of born Israelites— bora that is to say of parents not already alienated from the Jewish religion— ^y whom the Day of Atonement is entirely ignored. That insti tution far more than any other appeals in some mysterious way to almost everyone belonging to the Jewish body. But the manner in which it appeals to them, and the kind of influence which it exercises, differs far more than ...

The Jewish Method of Slaughtering. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

Tlje Jewish Method of Slaughtering, A statement which has recently been made on behalf of the Humanitarian League to the effect that they were contemplate g renewed opposition to the Jewish method of slaughtering caused my curiosity to be aroused, and I deter mined to see and judge for myself whether th contention of some that the Jewish method is more cruel than pole-axing was correct. I may point out that I am not of the Jewish faith and, therefore not biassed on religious grounds in favour of the Jewish method. Moreover, I happen to belong to the ranks of the vegetar ians, and am a firm believer not only in the un desirability of a flesh diet but in the absolute non-necessity of it. 1 do not recommend either of the two methods of slaughtering bat at once put rny vote down for the Jewish method ; the knife is sure and swift. The pole-axe may be swift, sure it certainly is not. The result of my enquiry leads me to the belief that of the two the Jewish method is the more humane. — (...

Around the World. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

Around the World. ? «, ? At many of the services held in London Synagogues great progress is being made by several portions being rendered in English. They indicate that congregations are not averse to the gradual introduction of the vernacular ?even on days whose sacred associations might be supposed to require more than ordinary res pect for conservative prejudices, even under the Chief Rabbi's auspices, English prayers are a noteworthy feature. The Services at the Jews' Free School have now for some time past been largely conducted in the vernacular. At the Great Assembly Hall Lord Rothschild's recital of the Book of Jonah in English was heard with the most respectable attention of the vast congregation of Polish Jews assembled in the Prayer for the Royal Family. Congregations evince an unmistakable liking for the vernacular by following the English readings with special attention, as may be inferred from the fact that the rustling of leaves on turning a page in either of the Hap...

Do WjS LOVE OUR JfEiaHBOUES ? The GrOD ?we as Jews worship is known by the attributes ' of Justice, Mercy, and Forgiveness. 'We all firmly believe in and are positively assured of His glorious Wisdom, by the many and wonderous creations which exist m perrect harmony and continue the regularity of their motions through eternity. When we contem plate that this All-powerful God has com manded us to love our neighbors, is it not our duty to consider how far we have proceeded to obey. Our thoughts lead us to the unfortu nate subjects of the Czar of Russia, who have for the crime of being Jews and Jewesses been hunted like wild beasts, tortured, stoned, un mercifully ravished, burned, and otherwise in most heinous manner slain. Or, if we call to mind the scenes enacted in Jerusaleum at the time the Temple was destroyed, and the host of like historical instances we recognise at once the punishments for our neglect of this commandment. For the Jew of Russia there was a time when he need not...

What to Teach Boys. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

What to Teach Boys. A philosopher 1 as said that true education to boys is to 'teach them what they ought to know when they become men.' 1. To be true and to be geuuine. No education is worth anything that does not include this. A man had better not know how to read — he had better never learn a letter in the alphabet, and be true, genuine in intention and in action — rather than be learned in all sciences and in all languages, to be at the same time false in heart and counterfeit in life. Above all things, teach boys that truth is more than riches, more than earthly power or possessions. 2. To be pure in thought, language and life — pure in mind and body. 3. To be unselfish. To care for the feelings and comforts of others. .To be polite, to be just in all dealings with others. To be generous, noble and manly. This will include a genuine reverence for the aged and for things sacred. 4. To be self-reliant and self-hopeful even from childhood. To be industrious always, and self-suppor...

The Talmud. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 3 December 1897

The Jewish Publication Society has just issued the ' Talmud ' from the pen of Arsene Darmesteter, translated from the French by Miss Henrietta Szold It is an excellent work and affords the lavman a knowledge of the Origin and superstruction1 of that vast com pendium of Jewish literature of which so little is known and that little i« lo grossly misconstructed, Publications of this kind which furnish useful and valuable information to the average Jewish reader upon a subject so interesting to us as Jews, cannot be too highly praised.
