THE North-eastern Ensign Published on Tuesdays and Fridays. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 17 September 1872

-THE 'P'?liad on. uiadals'and Fridays; :' TrESDAYo SEl. )1BE3 2l7i:.7 Ta? Francis .Government has. at length intro duced its Education Bill, and it was brought under the notice of the _touse by the AT. ToaXer-GCEzatL in a speech which'to us' in parts seemed laboured in the extreme. In fact, the honourable gentleman was, as his friend the Argus says, " too elaborate," and in our jiumble opinion he travelled beside the que. tiep when he erntered into n do.eiption f. th. public free schools of England aind the manner in which they had been abused. Thisalluision was quite beside the subject matter of the bill before the House, and the more tersely. and concisely a measure is introduced the better i will be understood. " It is evident that the ArTon?erz-GE??nE was too verbose in bring ieg forward the bill, whilst to our mind his logic was not of the highest grder. We a re not surprised at this, as many men who are clever in the subtleties of equity argumepnt are not such cogent reasoners...

PLOUGHING MATCH AT GRETA. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 17 September 1872

PLOUGHING MATCH AT GRETA. On Friday last a ploughing, match took place at Greta. The ground ploughed was that of Mr. John Bryson, who resides close to the township. The attendance was excel- lent, there being nearly 400 persons present, very many of whom came from Wangaratta. There is one thing we wish to allude to - viz., that there was no refreshment booth upon the ground. We believe that Mr. L. O'Brien, of the Greta Hotel, offered a liberal price for permission to erect a booth on the ground, but the privilege was refused. Mr Jones, a baker, did a roaring trade in selling lollies, cakes, and Rechabite drinks, but there were many on the ground who would have preferred something better. Besides the interest taken in the ploughing, the interest of the match was added to by the fact that during the whole day an active canvass was pursued on behalf of Mr Turn- bull and Mr P. O'Brien, the two candidates for the North-eastern Province, Mr Finney, who is the agent for Mr. O'Brien, suppor...
