MY CREED. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 21 March 1924

MY CREED. To live as gently as I can; To be, no matter where, a man; To take what comes of good or ill, And cling to faith and honours still, To do my best, and let that stand The record of my brain and hand; And then, should failure come to me, Still work and hope for victory. To have no secret place wherein I stoop unseen to 'shame or sin; To be the same when I'm alone As when my every deed is known; To live undaunted, unafraid Of any step that I have made; To be without pretence or sham Exactly what men think I am. To leave some simple mark behind To keep my having lived in mind; If enmity to aught 1 show, To be an honest, generous foe, To play my little part, nor whine That greater honors are not mine, This, 1 belie've, is all I need , For my philosophy and creed. — Edgar A. Guest.

Cheap Traiti Arrange ments THE BRITISH FLEET AND THE EASTER SHOW. ADVICE TO COUNTRY PEOPLE. There should be little doubt that the action of the Commissioners in advan cing the dates of the ordinary Easter cheap excursion trains so as to meet the convenience of those who wish to get to Sydney in time to be present at the arrival of the great British Fleet, will be appreciated by country people generally. unaer ordinary circumstances tue resources of the Department are taxed ' to cope with the extra traffic of people visiting the metropolis during the Easter Show and racing carnivals. But the Easter season of 1924 will be mem orable because of the fact that the mightiest naval force whicii ever left its home base will be seen at anchor In Sydney harbour. Because these two events so nearly synchronised, the Railway Commissioners l'ound them selves faced with a problem quite out of the ordinary. HEAVY TRAFFIC EXPECTED. STOCK BREEDING Show Pens and Sale yards CONSUMER'S REQUIREMENTS In tho following article, written by Armours, of Chicago, tho famous moat packers, show points of livo stock and the market requirements are discus sed. Armours are dealing with Ame rican conditions, of course, but there is much in what they writo of interest to Australia: — 'The breeder's justification of the livestock show is fourfold: — (1) It pro motes general acquaintance of the pub lic with the breed: (2j it provides op portunities for the dissemination of pure-bred stock; (3) it. develops and unifies the ideals of breed improve ment; and (4) it provides a guide to the commercial producer. It is the purpose of this letter to discuss tho last-named function iu terms of ilie present-day market. 'Robert Bakewell, tlie first breeder of livestock improved from the jtaiid point of efficiency for production and desirability of consumption, set st standard in the procedure of livestock breeding that has existed for over a...

STUD STOCK MAITLAND'S GREAT SHOW [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 21 March 1924

[?] By Our Special Representative — HARM R, THOMPSON MAITLAND'S GREAT SHOW The Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association held its An nual Show at West Maitland Inst week, in tho presence of a very large attend ance. It was an unusually fine Sho'v in every respect and constituted a re cord .from all points. The Association is lucky in having an unusually large ring that is absolutely level, and just ideal for its purpose. The way the whole Show was conducted, reflected the greatest credit on the officials. Mr. J. Enright looked after tbe ring in a masterly manner, and kept tilings well up to the mark. Tho President of the Association is Mr. E. W. Sparke, one of the best known and most respected men in the district, and the Secretary is Mr. John S. AGRICULTURAL BUREAU CONFERENCE The second Annual Conference of tlio Northern Districts Agricultural Bureau, was held in West Maitland during tlio Show Week. There was a good attend ance and Mr. It. Richardson was i' the chair. Tlio visitors were welcomed bv the President of the Agricultural Associa tion. Mr. E. W. Sparke, who extended to them tho freedom of the Show Ground during their stay. In the course of liis address, Mr. McDonald suggested specialising. If the land was suitable for lucerne, a man should specialise 011 that crop and so on. By doing this they got to know all about the work they were doing, and could produce better crops or stock, as tlie cuse might be. He urged them to pay more attention to the business side of their work ; he considered it as even of more importance tlinn the question of more production. MOTIONS DISCUSS...

A DAY AT THE SHOW [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 21 March 1924

A DAY AT THE SHOW An agricultural show is not only at tractive by its exhibits of produce and animals. Such things, of course, have their large percentage of admirers, but there are many who are attracted as much by the numerous and varied side shows. The methods these people adopt in gathering 111 the shekels is wonderful and varied. A turn amongst them is always more or less interesting. ^ou strike a tent, with a platform outside 011 which stand three or four boxing men, either ex-champions or champions to be. A man will tell you nil about them,, and endeavour to se cure opponents for a few rounds. It is remarkable the interest he succeeds in working up, and the fights he ar ranges. He gets the crowd so excited that his tent is soon filled. Then you will come across a man or woman with a stall filled with all sorts of small trinkets. These appeal to the youngsters chiefly, and they try to put a ball through squares, spear an arrow at numbers, or lodge a coin 011 a square so as to ...
