The first, and primary one is, that, by its terrible | example it niay deter others from commit ting crime. Secondfy, the punishment ofi the criminal. The last reason is not. con- J sidered of such importance as the first. for j the continuance of this (considered by many) objeotio nable punishment, Man or the laws of man can go no farther than death, it is the utmost extent, of their power. As an example it is certainty a terrible one; but as a punishment to the criminal himself it is to be very much doubted. not brought forward at the trial, or not properly explained to the jury at the trial, the more politic way to have acted would have been to have communicated it to the Governor, and thus influence*the Royal prerogative of' mercy, in either pardoning or commuting the sentence of the prisoner. No man would question the prerogative of the Orown; but as the case stands at pre sent the people are induced to believe that, even, if a man stands on the trap under neath the gallows, with the rope round his neck, money is all powerful and can save him.that it will discover doors through which the murderer, adulterer, and thoroughly wicked man can escape. Surely "there is something rotten in the State of Denmark.
