SPORTS AT STRATH CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

SP0RTS AT STR.TZ 0DEEELK (FRno OUR OW" CORRESPONDENT.) WnEN the ground committee viewed the track the day before the meeting and found it flooded with water frout the previous night's rain, there seemed to be no alternative but to select another or postpone the sports, but a way out of the difficulty was pointed out by Messrs. A. Ferguson and Arthur Forbes, who, by dint of vigorous digging, succeeded in draining the ground, and enabled the club to carry out the programme. Friday turned out a simply perfect day, which was a great slice of luck, as the rain, which had been incessant for a week pre viously, recommeniced on Saturday, and has continued ever since, the whole country being, at the present moment, a sheet of water and the roads abso lutely impassable. The meeting may be fairly described as a great success. The attendance was large, the entries numerous, the contests keen for most of the events, and last, but not least, the handicapping appeared to give general satisfaction....

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. TREE PLANTING. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

L1TT'Bs TO TEU ZDTOM. TREE PLANTI'G. TO THE EDITOR OF TOE CHRONICL. Snm,-I would like to direct the attention of the Tree Planting Committee, before it is too late, to the necessity for protecting the lowerportion of the guards. As the wire is fully ix inches off the ground, fox-terriers and other small dogs will delight to go un derneath and pull up the trees for amuse ment. If it is too late to lower the wire, then the spare earth ought to be filled up around the bottoms of the guards. If this is not done, all the money will, in my opinion, be wasted. The posts might also Ie driven down with a maul and made level. At present they are as crooked as a dog's hind leg.-I am, &c., RATEPAYER.

MOLESWORTH NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

QOLZESWORTZ NOTES. COcscILLnR MI'ConRucK has led the way andl se a good example to our residents by planting a number of trees along the road in front of his residence. If everyone would do likewise, the appearance of nor district would be undeniably improved at' a very small cost of labor. I trust the trees will survive the ravages of the alas! too numerous herds of cattle and horses that are continually about our roads and lanes, despite the fact that their owners have plenty of feed in their well-watered and grassed holdings. The Railway Department have evidently "profited by the loss" of the Public Works Department of their bridge at Orbest, swept away during late floods, as they have sent p a large punt or boat, with a plentiful supply of cable, to the line repairers hbore, to enable them to kerp the railway bridge freefree from snags during flood time, and thus minimise the danger of having it sweptaway. The river very quickly felt the effects of the late rains; it rose rapidl...

WHOLESALE SUICIDE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

ZOLESALE SGZCtDE. TrE present generation of mankind seems determined to proceed along the path that leads to death-the one that will kill it quickest. The struggle for existence, business worry, gambling, horse-racing, and all nervous excite ments, tend to reduce the vital strength and insure early death. Now-a-days it is the pace that kills; the body is worn out before its natural spell of life is spent. There is no reason why all men and women phsically perfect-should not live to be centenarians, provided care was taken that the system was not over taxed in any particular direction. The symptoms of failing vitality are almost too well known to need citsmieration here; first the appetite fails, with pain after eating, nervousness ensues, and sleepless or restless nights with head aches and tired aching limbs on arising in the morning; a confirmed languor or lassitude takes possession of the sufferer, who loses 'all interest in pleasure and even in life itself. Un fortunately 'suci ...

YEA POLICE COURT. TUESDAY, JULY 21. (Before Mr. J. Keogh, P.M., Messrs. E. S. Purcell, T. S. Scale, J. Quinlan, and J. M'Cormick, J.P's.) FENCING CROWN LAND. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

TUESDAY, JULY 21.   (Before Mr. J: Keogh, P.M., Messrs. E. S. Purcell, T. S. Scale, J. Quin- lan, and J. M'Cormick, J.P's.)   FENLCING CROWN LAND. Senior-constable Alexander, Crown Lands Bailiff, charged Owen Cavanagh with being in unauthorised occupation of Crown land, near the Temperance Hall, Yea. The plaintiff stated that on the 7th inst. he asked defendant by what authority he held the land, and he re plied, " Under miner's right." Witness told him he could not do so, as the township of Yea had been exempt from. occupationi y proclaumation in the CGoermlu eni Gazette. The date of the proclamation was August 13, 1886. Defendant sil hlie would fight it out, as other people had taken up land under miner's right since the proclamation. . Mr. King, who appeared for the defendant, held that as the Crown Lands Bailiff's appointment was made in 1870, and proceedings were insti tuted under the Act of 1890, the case could not proceed. Objection overruled. Cross-...

ROYAL MILITARY TOURNAMENT LETTER FROM CAPTAIN M'LEISH. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 23 July 1891

ROY'AL MLITAY TOUARNAlMEN' LETTER FROM CAPTAIN MI'LEISH. As the Victorian Mounted Rifles Team were taking their departure, the Editor of the CIHROSICLE made a request to Capt. M'Leish to furnish some particulars of their visit to England, and he has very courteously for warded the following interesting account. The letter is dated from the York Hotel, Albermarle-street, London, June 13, and it reached us on Tuesday, a little over five weeks after it was written:--I started to write to you during the time the Tournal mient was on, but somehow I never finished the letter. Of course, the Tournament is: over some time. It was a very big thing, and paid very well indeed. I heard that the takings this year amounted to nearly' £2,000 more ttan any previous year. The' money, after deducting expenses, is devoted to charities. I won't say that the V.M. Rifles had anything to do with. the success, but a good many people here have said so. I know that the public treated us unom-. moniy well alw...
