The Anglican Bishop of Newcastle, touch ing on social questions, considers that the Church and the Church alone, holds the key to all the vexed problems of the age. Mr Walter Q. Gresham, the United States Secretary for State, is dead. Her Majesty Queen Victoria will have reigned 58 years on June 20. Additions to the Colonial Secretary's Buildings, Sydney, approaching completion, will effect a saving of £2800 in rentals for other offices. A PLAGUE OF MICE, [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 11 June 1895

A PLAGUE OF MICE, The farmers aud selector* have had to encounter many difficulties of late yearr. Low prices and unfavorable seasons have lauded many ot them in financial strait*, and. they are now being threatened with ft danger, whioh ia likely to overshadow «U these, unless some means are taki-n to check its orosress. We refer to the havoc wroucht in seme wheat fields in this district by mice, a plague of mice, hi a more accurate nay of describing this put. At Uroug Orong some of the farmers have had to re-sow their wheat; the first sowing having been com pletely eaten off by mice, which oin. ba counted ia hund eds in' some of ths wheat paddocks. The settlers whose wheat areas are icvaded are to be commiserated, for they are powerless in arresting the progress of the vermin. No doubt, oertsin specifics would prove efficaoions in stamping them out, but the farmer h^s to count the cost, which we fear would not compensate him foe hi* trouble.

WHY NOT PLANT ONINIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 11 June 1895

WHY HOT PLANT ONINIQNS. The simple fact 4&at oninons are worth' more at 'retail than oranges is a whole chapter by itself. Remarkable as this may seem, snch ie the case. Good oranges are sold sometimes in Sydney at the rate of from 4d to'6d per bucket, yet oninons aotually cost Odper dozen, and eveu more for those of larger sizes, that being the rate at which they are sold at the fruit and vecetable stands about Sydney, when they*are obtain able at all, which is by no means always the case. The onion is not difficult Jto suit in soil in the Narandera distriot. -It requiraa. a rioh sandy loam, the richer the better, and under, favorable conditions ^yields enormous crops. Here is an industry, winch some of our farmers might enter with ad vantage. Of course, in advocating this, one ? is continually met with what is supposed' to be a poser viz: that it is useless for the Eureopean to competet.with -tGe Chinaman. The allegation is that no -white man can produce vegetables at a pr...
