THE MAYOR'S BALL. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE "FREE PRESS.") [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 October 1865

TITHE MAYOR'S BALL. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE :FREE PRESS.") Sir,--I was delighted to learn from the letter of "Lex" in your issue of Thursday last that our worthy Mayor is waking up to a sense of what is due to his high position in this town, and intends giving a fancy dress ball before his term of office expires. This is glorious news for the ladies of our borough and Dancer and Toleration, to mark their appreciation of the event, have agreed to shake hands over their difference about dancing and kiss in the ring. As an admirer of our worthy and respected Mayor I am glad he took this notion, and at this partieu. lar time, when thiings are so very flat and dull in the borough, and when everybody was wishing that something would turn up that would relieve the ennui. His Worship's enemies are very wrath about this ball and say he gives it to conciliate some stubborn councillors, who, it is said, would be opposed to his election for the ensuing year, but this is a niotive unworthy of him,...

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE "FREE PRESS.") [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 October 1865

ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. (TO TUE.EDITOR OE THE "FF.E PRESS.") Sir,-iHaviug lately seen in one of your papers how effectually you brought some of the Kilmore hypocrites before the public in their true colours, I could not refrain from expressing a wish that we had some such journal as yours on the Ja mieson. The detestable hypocrisy and du plicity of a small clique of semi-religious ranters, among whom I am sorry to say can be numbered men holding responsible oDli e es under the Government, has of late given a character to this place, which cannot fail to disgust liberal men, no matter what their creed or country may be. Certainly it must have been very edifying to us here to see a bank clerk, whose sepulchral voice, indepen dent of the other excellent qualifications of u good ranter which he possesses, could not fiil to turn the minds of his hearers to the land of spirits, after vanishing from his mini the number of pounds, shillings, and pence thumbed over by him during the past we...

JURIES AND BREACHES OF PROMISE. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 October 1865

JrnIES Asn BREACUES or PRo31SE. When a young and pretty lady was set be fore them as having been deluded, there was no holding them in. IHe remembered hear ing an old gentleman, who had been a bar rister in India, tell the story of a .Circassian slave who had murdered the master of a harem there. This counsel had to defend her. It was a bad case, but he said "Put her in her best dress, the more transparent the better; set her opposite the jury, and I'll answer for the result." and the result was exactly what he predicted. She had stabbed the man, but the jury pardoned the crime for the sake of the interesting woman they saw before them. So in the case of an ac tion for breach of promise. A youag and interesting woman would get damages ; but if a man was ever so young and interesting he got no damages, but had to pay heavy costs and get scouted besides.-(Mr. Hardy ia the House of Commons.) Why it hap pened he could not say ; but his experience in courts of justice was that in actions...

PeIBL..IIGD HIIIfSDAY iORM?5GQ'. TIIURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1805. IF ever a governor of a British dependency placed himself in an awkward, position-a dificulty not easily got out of-it is surely Sir Charles Darling; or if ever one stooped below the dignity which he was in honour bound to maintain, by making the pubhe feel he was equal to the occasion, such a per son is the model governor of Victoria. A great deal is said and'done by an ignorant rabble aboutthe "abuse"haunched out against this wort'hy by the Argus, the Herald, and other papers, but in our opinion except jour nals stepped beyond the bounds of morality and decency-s-tooped below their high mis sion-any castigation or abuse indulged in would not be at all equal to what was deser red. A rabble most magnanimously groans the Herald and Argus, and pronounces them most unworthy organs, while the "Age" is upheld with a pertinacity which does credit to its admirers, it is extolled for its virtue, cherished for its high moral tone, ...

PYALONG ROAD BOARD. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 October 1865

PYALONG ROAD BOARD. Ot' contemporary the Examiner of Tues day, must certainly have been hard up for the subject matter for a leader or else that billions attack which seems a predominant feature in his constitution must have razed with that force which such a malady invariably inspires him with. "The popularity of air. Lawrence Bourke," quoth he, "is on the wane." And, we could not now of course be expected to contradict a faruseeing gentleman like the ed itor of the Examiner, more especially as he holds council with one or two long-headed --though they may not be asses-gentlemen in and about Moranding--fellows who we suppose 3r.
