CAPTAIN PASCO'S REPLY. To Mr D. E. Stodart, junr., J.P., and other Magistrates signing the address. GENTLEMEN, - After nearly twenty-six years' service as Police Magistrate and Warden in seven different districts in this colony, it is very gratifying to receive the kind address which is now presented to me by my col leagues on the bench of the lust three years. Duriag the whole period of my service I am unconscious of a single unpleasantness with any one of my brother magistrattes, which is a source of thankfulness to me that my lot should have been cast among those who have not rubbed me the wrong way. My very sudden and almost ignominious dismissal, to which you no feelingly allude, has been specially painful in my case, as'.I can assure you that I have never labored in any district whlich has combined so much real personal pleasure with stern duty as I have found in my last three years' service. The view of the varied fioliago in tile dark dells, as seen from the snowy sunmmits o...

He says " the school in Little Bourke street is in an alley, ntd the children are-often taught in the road for want of room inside. Not long ago two Chinese brothels were opened'hard by. and the children could watch the euetomers going in and out during the class work /I The italics are ours. Is it possible that such a deplorable'state of things can havo been permitted with the cognizance of the heads of the Department? Surely some of the in spectors must have known of this. Professor Pearson was not long in find ing it out...

(To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 April 1878

(To the Editor of the Standard.) SIn,-Allow me to correct an error in your report of the Hospital Committee meeting, held on the 11th inst. A resolution was passed "That a concert b held for the bone fit of the hospitnl, under the patronage of this committee." This seems to have escaped your notice. The secretary was not instructed to communicato with any one on the subject, neither was it intended to give him any trouble in the matter. The mover of the resolution stated that only one lady had been spoken to about the concert, and that she had kindly promised to do all she could to make it a success. It is to be wished that the ladies and gentlemen who may be invited to take part will not feel slighted on bring told that several ladies had promised to do so. The idea of a concert originated with the lady who promised her services. CIAROLEs COOKSON. IThe report as published in our journal was furnished to our reporter by the secretary of the institution.-EnD A. ¢ Y.S.]
