Wise men ha,ve ^endeavored to ascertain its age in various ] ways, and succeded very well, only - differing in their calculations a few thousand centuries or so. We have several reasons for writing ' upon the earththo principal one being the imperfect! facilities afforded'for get-.ting upon any other planet to " write. Nothing presents our writing upon tjae sun or moon; except.the difficulty of getting there. j The earth is the thirdiplanet in order from the sunand the! largest within the. belt of the planetoids. We have wpndered, sometimes why the earth did not have a belt all to herself,, being the Chainpion oi * tfie Universe? i ] 1 ' ' ' 1 ] 1 \ [For Tao Agitator.] Pioneer Skotchcs. I have'read the sketches of the early settlement of Tioga County lately published in The Agitatorand naturally feel much interest in ^ such , reminiscences; having lived in Northern Pennsylvania since February K04, part of the time in Bradford and the remainder in Tioga County. I glean from McMaster's history of Steuben County that Samuel Bakerfrom Connecticut, built a cabin between the Tioga and Cowanesque rivers, a few rods South bf the State line. His entire movables consisted of a cow, and such things as lie could carry on his back. His nearest neighbor was a Mr. Harris, an Indian trader at the.Painted Post, the next below Elmira. During the summer Mr. Stone, frora Massachusettss, who liad been engaged in the Shays' Rebellion, and tied to the wilderness to escape arrest. In the fallMr. Barker left Stone in care of his cabin andewsv while he went east to get his family, with whom he returned the next spring. Here he live...
