Capitol's Technology degree fits the bill [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

Capitol's Technology degree fits the bill By Linda McCarty Capitol's Bachelor of Technology degree may be just what the doctor ordered for companies in need of "hands on" engineers. "I feel technology students are very well prepared,"said James Long, manager of the Manufacturing Engineering Signal Components Division of AMP, Inc. Long, also the chairman of the Harrisburg Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, said that while other companies may put barriers around the technology degree, in his mind "there is no clear distinction between the B.T. and the B.S.M.E." in his field of work. In his work, which includes machine and tool design, manufacturing and industrial engineering, Long said he has found technology students have a more "hands on" type of education. However, there is a more distinct academic difference between a technology degree and an engineering degree. According to Dr. William Welsh, Head of the Division of Science, Engineering and Technology, tec...

Business division head explains B.B.A. [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

Business division head explains B.B.A. By Linda McCarty So just what is a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree? According to Dr. Christopher McKenna, Division Head of Public Affairs and Acting Head of the Division of Business Administration, this degree title not strictly unique to Capitol, traditionally suggests a more broadbased curriculum in business. Conversly, the more widely recognized Bachelor of Science degree in Business usually suggests a quantitative requirement in a college of science. "The B.S. requirements usually include a couple semesters of calculus as a minimuim with a general science component of at least physics and chemistry," said Dr. McKenna. For example, "someone with a B.S. in accounting not only would have the quantitative component, but a more intense string of courses in accounting with not as many non-accounting business requirements," he added. Yet, said Dr. McKenna, the B.B.A. has evolved into a broadbased degree with a strong focus so ...

Bookstore administration explains policies [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

Bookstore administration explains policies By James E. Fitzroy Questions raised at a recent Student Government Association meeting concerning complaints from students about the campus bookstore operation never reached Bookstore Committee Chairman Dr. Joseph Dreiss, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Dreiss said in a telephone interview. The complaints were reported to be in regard to lack of availability of certain texts and confusion about various policies in effect at the bookstore. During the Dreiss interview he indicated that a more thorough understanding by students of the whys and whats of the bookstore's existence might be accomplished by speaking with the persons responsible for its operation. Robert Hamill of the Business Office oversees the management by William Kistler of the store. The many daily tasks are Kistler's responsibility. With the help of a small staff he maintains the varied inventory, checks the cash flow, balances the books in more than one sense, ...

Professor extolls positive attitude [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

Professor extolls positive attitude By James Fitzroy "The determined student will look for more work in order to understand; the student who wants only to get his piece of paper thinking of it as a passport to prosperity generally complains about the workload," said Assistant Professor of Computer Applications Dr. Mehdi Khosrowpour recently. The professor seems genuinely concerned about what he sees as an overall lack of committment by students to the learning experience available here at Capitol Campus. He said that in his experience as a student and as an educator, "everywhere I've been I've found a core of complainers who don't see that their trouble is in their attitude. They choose to blame factors outside themselvesteachers, workload, administrators, what have you. All of this is just an excuse to escape personal responsibility for one's success or failure." Khosrowpour is a man who cannot accept or understand a negative attitude. "Challenge is what life should be bu...

Clinton's latest albums sound an earthy note [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

Clinton's latest albums sound an earthy note By Angelo Vecchio George Clinton is perhaps the most underrated performer on today's music scene. As the leader of Parliament/Funkadelic, Clinton was responsible for the release of about twenty-five albums since 1970. In addition to these, he produced a countless nmumber of LP's for the P. Funk spin-off groups, including Bootsy's Rubber Band, The Brides of Funkenstein, Parlet, Godmoma, The Horny Horns, Eddie Hazel and others. These names may be unfamiliar to many pop music fans, but Clinton's groups doninated the soul/R&B charts for about four years (1976-79). Clinton experienced a relative dry spell for a couple of years until he hit number one on the soul charts last year with the upbeat "Atomic Dog." "Dog" and the album from which it was cut, Computer Games, were released under the name George Clinton. This was the first time he opted to use his own name instead of "Parliament," "Funkadelic," or "P. Fu...

'Footloose' has a lot of loose footage [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 March 1984

'Footloose' has a lot of loose footage A Movie Review By Don Strausburger It has been billed as the street dancer's version of Flashdance; however, Footloose never quite fulfills its advance publicity. The film stars Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormick, a "hot shot from the big city," and Lori Singer, formerly of the TV series Fame, as Ariel, the local minister's daughter. The movie takes place in a small midwestern town in which loud music, drinking and dancing have been banned by law. Ren moves into the town finding the typical amount of resistance to the new kid, and is instantly labeled as a threat by the entire population. With the help of Ariel, he tries to influence the town council to let the town's teenagers have a dance. The leader of the opposition is Ariel's father, played by John Lithgow of Terms of Endearment. The town's adults are finally convinced that the morals of the teenagers will not be broken by the activity and allows the dance to take place. The subplots o...
