1 THE DAIRY [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

1 THE DAIRY THAT BIG RUT—ARE YOU IN IT ? If everything was charged to the dairy , that belongs to it , there are but few men that would make It pay . False estimates are made , such as charging the grain and hay at cost instead ot the market price ; the pork sold and the veals raised figured at cost and the profits credited to the cows in a vain attempt to make the cows come out even . But a greater cause of worry is the vast majority that do not figure on it at all . A man who is keeping some kind of an estimate will realize his condition and gel in the middle of the road after awhile . He who continues on , year after year , without a pencil , either dies from hard work , goes to the poorhouse , or has enough income from other sources to make good the loss . I called on a man not long since of the latter class . He has -worked like a slave all his life and always had a dairy of 10 to 20 cows for the mainstay on a rough and hilly farm . This was a wise thing to do as it was better ...

DIFFICULT CHURNING . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

DIFFICULT CHURNING . Under the above heading , on page 9 , Jan . 19 , Constant Reader and W . E . B ., describe graphically their troubles in trying to make butter from obstinate cream . This brings back memories of years gone by , when wife and I did the churning at our house—the time we try so hard to forget . Is it any wonder our grandmothers used to throw red-hot horseshoes into the cream to drive away the witches ? I imagine that Constant Reader sometimes feels as though there were uncanny causes preventing that cream from churning into butter . But the causes are natural ones , and I believe in 99 cases out of 100 , may be overcome easily . The feeding of the cows may play a part in creating the trouble , especially in giving the cream that bad smell complained of . I have never fed potatoes to cows , but the question came up a year ago , and was thoroughly discussed at our institute . Everyone having fed potatoes to milk cows were positive they gave the butter a bad flavor , ...

THE FARMER'S GOLD MINE . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

THE FARMERS GOLD MINE . It is right down in the barnyard Wi do not always appreciate the fact , but it is there , all the same . For some reason or other not all daily farmers place a proper estimate on their business . Perhaps this is due in part to the almost universal habit we have of complaining about thing that comes to us to do . taps it may be because we do i in siop long enough to think about rhaps we do not realize the fact bill ihink we are entitled to something ! . and feel hurt that our ability is not valued as highly by the AllBeing who has placed us where we are and given us this particular kind of work to do . Stop long enough to think about it for a moment . In many lines of busimen must wait for months and perhaps years before they see much return for their labor . They invest their money , put in a great deal of work , and only after a long time do they begin to reap returns . The dairy farmer receives his returns at the end iort periods . Very seldom does he to wa...
