¦ Mtt ^ Mmdiani ^ tefttotetelrt 1 Current Events I BfahdahMB ^ p ^ THE recent gamblers panic in New York emphasizes the need of drastic measures to control the ambitions of such leeches . Farmers so far have let the gambling fraternity fight it out and fleece the public as be . st they could , butconditions are growing serious when combinations of capital amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars connive together to injure the business of the country . These rascals started out to scare the administration into submission . They objected to President Roosevelts policy of treating rich rascals the same as poor rascals , so they have engineered two money scares this , year to carry their ends . Sentiment in \ he United States has always made a distinction in crime by favoring the big thieves , and these Wall street gamblers want the false sentiment continued in their favor . If any set of thieves ever deserved the penitentiary these money sharks should , receive first consideration ...

lil Dairy and Live StockJ J [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 December 1907

lil Dairy and Live StockJ J FARMERS are likely to be too prodigal when feeding the brood sow . Roots , straw and clover hay to pick over , and one ear of corn a day , makes a good ration for breeding stock . It doesn t pay to winter old sheep . Occasionally an exceptional good mother may be coaxed through after her teeth begin to fail , but as a general thing it is better to dispose of ewes after the fifth year . . Thumps may be prevented by compelling the little pigs to take plenty of exercise . Coax them to eat green stuff out in the sunshine as . early in life as possible . I £ -necessary , keep them . away from the sows two or three hours each day . Rig up . a box for a mixture of salt , charcoal and wood ashes where the hogs can get their noses into it whenever they want to . It is just as well to have it covered with a lid . strongly hinged . If the lid projects an inch they will lift it when they want to . A serious hog disease near Marshalltown , la ., this fall was finally ...

& mm @® M ^ m » mm @® Mmmm fl Orchard and Garden [ j of in [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 December 1907

& mm @® M ^ m » mm @® Mmmm fl Orchard and Garden [ j of in A FTER years of discussion , orchard men have settled on a two-year-old apple tree as being the most profitable to plant , but they should of course Jbe vigorous enough to give good evidence Of strong vitality . In setting a new strawberry bed with etock from an old one , have the plants thoroughly fumigated . This is a good precaution to take no matter where the plants come from . Many old orchards are in need of good applications of potash and other fertilizers , but not all orchards are alike . As a general thing , however , most old orchards may be benefited by growing such crops as clover , cow peas or field peas , and turning them under for green manure , being careful not to plow too deep . Use shallow dishes with clean , sharp sand for rooting sections of plants . Keep the sand moist enough so water will fill a finger mark . A little sunshine each day will help them to root and as soon as a root system is...

§ The Grange g I RRIGATION work in the far west is reducing the average size of farms , San Joaquin county , California ) for instance , six years ago contained 1 , 966 farms averaging 440 acres each . The average now has dropped to 208 acres . In the county there are - 127 profitable farms of less than three acres each , and there are 362 farms of less than ten acres each , The change is due to irrigation , which has brought about intensive diversified crop growing . Small farms are better managed . Scientific methods of culture are used and much greater profit per acre is the result .
