Judge Poland attributes the late Re publican disasters to Butloriam, prohi bition, the Sanborn contracts and the third terra. Mr. C. T. Mrs. Sherman camo to Washington and called upon the Presi dent. Sho stated that for more than twelve vcars bhobad been General Slier man's wile, and, if any ono was capable U judging as to tno soundness 01 ni.s mind, It would be herself. Sho declared that there had never been the slightest indication of insanity, though they might drive him to it; that, if ho were insane, she would be the first to desire to with draw him from the public gaze, but, so far from desiring that, shocked that he might be intrusted with anything that was difficult, or that was becoming his rank.
