. While there is a quiet every where else, our sister state of Mississippi is in the throes of an election on which much de pends. Prfls have been opened in Jackson to determine who is "the most beautiful young lady in Mississippi," and all have been invited to participate therein after paying a small poll tax to the Presbyterian Aid Society of that city. The ballot-boxes will be opened April 20th and the vote, fairly counted and May 4th, the successful candidate will be crowned queen of May, with all the regal hon ors, .at West Point. She will have lour maids of honor, se lected from the four young la dies whose votes are next high est to hers. N. O. Democrat. Daggers, swords ot various shapes, battle axes, battering rams, clubs, and other medixval and antique weapons are found among the new millinery orna ments. I dreaded entering the room, and encountering the eyes of the people already assembled there ; and once fairly in, I was overshadowed all the evening by the dreadful necessity of.by-and-by, retiring.
