flambria Freeman. EDEXSUIRG, PA. TuunstMiY Mor5i.no, : Nov. 24, 1870. The State Treasurjuhlp. . It is becoming very evident, from the tone of the leading Radical papers in the State, that the disgraceful political debauch ery that attended the election of State Treas urer by the Legislature in January last, will be re-enacted at the election of that officer during the approaching session. ' It is open ly declared that Simon Cameren, through tho corrupt appliances of which he is so fckillful a master, is determined to re instate his friend Mackey in the position from which he was unexpectedly ejected lat winter by General Irwin. That result was bro ugbt about by the Democratic members and about fifteen or eighteen dissatisfied Radicals uni ting and casting their vote? for Irwin. Be lievicg that Mackey was unscrupulous and corrupt that he was the head and front of the notorious "Tiessury King" we ap proved of the action of the Democratic mem bers in supporting Oen. Irwin. There 8t a lady-like wife waiting for him ; the table fairly groaned, not with plated silver, but the solid mate rial. The cloth was white as the snow, the family were itcatod round in pleasant j expectancy ; everytlirng vraa smoking hot, and not an article there but even a pam pered appetite could revel on. But the man's favorite dish was not there. Closer he came to the table, and with the inquiry, 'Did you not know that I wanted a shad for breakfast f" Ife raised his foot and Overturned the whole table on the floor, "Ii'was at the fire being kept warm for you," replied his noble wife in her quiet, lady-like and conquering way. In an in stant the haughty husband comprehended the situation ; the next he was on his knees exclaiming, ''Dear wife, you are nothing else but an angel born " .Not a great while after that he died. Oambria Freeman. EDEKSDI7RG, PA. TllCRSDAT MORNINO, : DlC. 1, 1870. Tub Speaker of the Senate, Gen. Iljtrry White, has issued his writ, directed to the Sheriff of Philadelphia, ordering a special election to be held in the First Senatorial District, on Tuesday, the 20A of this month, to supply the vacancy occasioned by the . death of Wm. W. Watt. It is understood that both parties will make their nomina tions next week. We suppose that GraDt j rjom; will lurmsh the necessary number of United States troops to secure a fair and honest elec tion. Why not ? The district is a close one, and it seems to be conceded that the most unexceptionable and competent candidate will be successful. Let the Democrats of the district, therefore, embrace the oppor tunity that is now oflered to them. Ileecher on Rutlcr. The new leader of the Radical party, Ben jamin F. Butler, after having had a confi dential interview with Grant, repaired to Boston, and on yesterday week delivered his promised ad drees...

Li 1 A CURIOUS custom: Sir John Lubbock, in bis recent work on "The Origin of Civilization," speaks of a curious custom very widely spread among Bavage? of all regions, by which, on the birth of a baby, the father, and not the mother, is put to bed and Diirsed like a sick person fur several weeks. This 'custom was almost universal among the Indians of South Amer ica. Dobritizhoffer, the old Jesuit mission ary to Paraguay, tells us that "no sooner do you hear that a woman has borne a child than you see the husband lying in bed. hud dled up with mats and i-kins lest some ruder breath of air should touch him, fasting, kept in private, and for a number of days ab staining religiously Irom certain viand ; you "would b wear it was be that had the child. I had read about this in old limes, and laughed at it, not thinking I could believe such madness ; I used to suspect that this barbarian custom was related more in jest than in earnest; but at last I saw it with my own eyes amonj the Abipo...

Divorced .Tleetln on the Desert, and a One of the pioneers in California emi gration, who went across the plains in 1849, tells this story, that began on the journey and has just enJei in San Fran -cisco : When the -train, of which the nanator," now in Nevada, was a member, was en camped on the Humboldt where the Lessen trail intersects the Careon track of travel, he visited- the tent of a family consisting of an elderly couple and one child, a daughter of 14 or 15. The old lady was sitting on a pile of blankets under the canvas, encoura ging a most determined attack of the 'su.ks,' while the masculine head of affairs had planted himself on the wooden tongue, and was BuckiDg his pipe as though he expected to remain there for ever. A single glance developed the difficulty in that little train of one wagon and three per sons, and that it had attained a point of quiet desperation beyond the reach of peace- lul adjustment. Three days before they had pncneu tueir tent at the lurks of the...
