The name of Murat Halstead, of the Cin cinnati Comtnereial has been mentioned in connection with the Turkish mission. There has been however, no offer of that mission, and the thing is in abeyance, yet The committee of arrangements to pre pare for the Chamber of Commerce recep tion to President Hayes in New York. May 15th, have invited Governor Tilden to be present, and he has accepted. There is a smart chance for the lion and the hyena to lie down together. The general aspect of the struggle be- tween Russia and Turkey is affect in g Eng land, and not only showing itself in Parlia ment, but in the ship-yards, where great activity is apparent. The recent Ohio Legislature passed an act making the office of County Auditor a three years' term instead of two. on in- The national debt has been reduced since 1868, according to footings of the Treasury Department, orer 443 million dollars. The war which the Mormons threatened to inrolve the country in, according to re ports last week, has apparently ended in talk. - On Monday last President Hayes and suit arrived at the city of New York in the afternoon, as the guest of the Chamber cf Commerce, to be present at their annual banquet on Tuesday evening. The New York Tribune created a com motion amongst its army of readers on Saturday by requiring them to stand their heads in order to get at the true wardness of its map of "the seat of war on the Danube," which was printed upside down. The latest news from Oregon is that the Murphy tidal wave has struck that State, including Cronin's nose, and nearly extin guished that famous beai-on light. Twelve States will hold elections before Congress meets, viz: Oregon, in June; N. Carolina and Alabama, in August ; Arkan sas. California, Vermont and Maine, in September; West Virginia, Ohio, Indian na, Iowa and Connecticut, in October. Several Russian army suttlers convicted of adulterating flour for the use of the sol diers, were shot.
