RTHERN TRIBUNE. J SATURDAY. JULY 12. 1879. Official Paper of the County and Village KXrEKIMFAT BECOMES SUCCESS. With the present issue commences the fifth volume of the Northern Tribune. Four years without interruption has the paper made its regular weekly visits to the families of its patrons, visits which we hope have been fraught with much pleasure, and we trust not a little profit. By the aid of a kind people the Tribune has passed safely through those years of struggle in which it has battled manful ly for life and existance, in a town where other newspapers rose and fell. Upon tha dark times through which it passed, for there have been dark days, we will not dwell, preferring to look upon the brisht side and to the future. Since the first issue, which received such a warm welcome four years ago, there have been made many improvements in the office and additions to the facilities for pub lishing a paper, from all of which our patrons have received the benefit in the way of our ...

The piles driven by the Cheboygan Lumber company, at the mouth of the river are being sawed preparatory to capping for the plank of the dock. The pile driver was at work this week driving new piles under the east ap proach to the bridge in place of those orn out by a lighter a short time since. NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1879. Oflcial Paper of the County and Village ATOItO TO OUIt PATKOXS. With last week's issue we commenced the fifth volume of the Tribune. The reading matter was printed upon new, type manufactured to order, for the paper. There had been complaint upon the part of those of our readers who had begun to grow old, about the smallness of the type which had previously been used. To obviate this the new type was ordered and, as stated lastVeek, the face of the. type is much larger than that of the old and yet there has been no dimi nuation of the amount of matter furnish ed the reader, for while the face of the type is larger and therefore plainer and easier to read the body is no larger than that of the type formerly used. This change has been made solely for the benefit of the readers of the paper. The old type was but little the worse for wear and would have lasted for years and made a good appearing paper. From the last issue you can judge of the i...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE SATURDAY. JULY 12, 1879. Till ED Bl OTHERS. A little elbow leans upon your knee. Your tired knee that has no much to bear; A child's dear eyes are looking lovingly From underneath a thatch of tangled hair, Perhaps you do not heed the velvet touch . Of warm, moist fingers, folding yours so tight; You do not prize this blessing overmuch; You almost are too tired to pray to-night. But It it blessedness I A year ago ' " I did not see it as I do to-day We are too dull and thankless; and too slow To catch the sunshine till it slips away. And now It seems surpassing strange to me That, while I wore the badge of motherhood, I did not kiss more oft and tendorly The little child that brought me only good. And If, some night, when you sit down to rest. You miss this elbow from your tired knee; This restless, curling head from off your breast, . This lisping tongue that chatters constantly. If from your own the dimpled hands had sllp- And ne'er would nestle ia your palm again; ...

SATURDAY, JULY 26, 1879. Official Paper of the County and Village RAILROAD PROJECTS According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Chicago railroad interests are figuring for a new combination in which Michigan is greatly interested. It is well known that the railroad interests of that city have in the past labored to prevent the construction of the Mar quette and Mackinaw road. How well they hare succeeded is shown in the fact that.the road, apparently, is no near er being built to-day than when the pro ject was first agitated. What they have done for Michigan they now propose to do for Minnesota and the great northwest by purchasing the Duluth road and by high rates, compelling that section of the country to pay tribute to Chicago by forcing them to ship all their produce by the roads leading through Chicago. In reference to the matter the Pioneer- Press says: , What is now needed by . all the great interests of Minnesota and Dakota, and especially by the heavy manufacturing and commerc...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 1879. Official Paper of the County and Village THE STATE FAIR. It is generally known the State Fair will begin the 15th of next month at Detroit Only about six weeks from this time. If Cheboygan is to be prop erly represented at the exhibition, it is time our citizens were taking some in terest in the matter. The committee appointed by the County Agricultural society, consisting of Hon. Jacob Walton, M. W. Home and A. B. Riggs, are at work endeavoring to get the citizens inter ested. In this they should have no trouble. It is a matter of the utmost importance to all who are interested in the growth and prosperity of the county. In view of this, all should unite and aid the committee in securing a full supply of such products of the soil as they may deem best for the interest of the county, to place upon exhibition. The northern portion of our state has labored under the disadvantage of being misrepresent ed, and its development been greatly reta...
