They have taken photos of drug deals using their cell phones and called in suspect descriptions and license plates to police. When they entered one drug camp with police recently, there were men in suits with young people who looked like college students — not exactly the stereotype of a junkie. Take Back Santa Cruz members say they’re not trying to be vigilantes. Rather, they say, they simply want to help police reclaim parts of the city overrun with crime. For months, they have been on the lookout for evidence of drug dealing to turn over to police and raise awareness about the city’s dark recesses. With video cameras in hand, they have walked into Pogonip between UC Santa Cruz and Highway 9, as well as secluded spots adjacent to the Highway 1 and Highway 9 intersections, to film drug dens in action. TAKE BACK SANTA CRUZ Members of Take Back Santa Cruz are going a step further. Members of the anti-crime advocacy group, which has more than 4,700 followers on its Facebook page, regu...

Dan Flippo patrols in Pogonip as the Santa Cruz Police Department's Street Crimes Unit searches for heroin dealers not far from an area dubbed ‘ Heroin Hill.’ HEROIN Continued from A1 “There’s a lot of overdoses on heroin, there’s just not as many deaths as there used to be,” he says. “Some people who need it so bad, they don’t care what the drug looks like,” says Rich Westphal, commander of the county’s Anti-Crime Team. The hits sold in Pogonip typically are goopy and less potent, while something a dealer sells from a house in Mid-County or delivers in Watsonville could be much stronger. People overdose when they graduate from Pogonip heroin to drugs sold elsewhere, Jones says. In the 1980s and early ’ 90s, Burt says he couldn’t go five days without responding to a heroin ...
