I arms oil the llnllii. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

I arms oil the llnllii. IHarper'H Muicu/lm* I A more beautiful farming country does not exist than that ulong the southern shore of the Baltic. No fences mark the boundaries of the fertile farms which stretch away over the rolling hills to the distant horizon, all aglow with yellow grain. At intervals a. clump of trees, often seen intensely diir'.; against the ripe grain, shows where a farm-houso stands, and giant windmills swing their sails on the highest hill-tops. Tlih highway, a finely built chaussee, leads straight across the country, only curving to pass through somo village. Mountain, ash, birch, and cherry trees border the road in au unbroken rank. In the ditches and by the road grow countless varieties of wild flowers—a perfect paradise for the botanist. From the highest hill the eye meets to the south a succession of grain fields. To the north, beyond the soft undulations of the cultivated hills, the Baltic shimmers in tho strong sunlight, a narrow line, sharp at the horiz...

KM Solution of no Old Puzzle. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

KM Solution of no Old Puzzle. [Arkansuw Traveler.] A German physicist attributes tho woll-known uLraumenpn of the apparent enlargement of tho sun and moon, when rising or setting, to two physio logical causes. Ono is the greater sensitiveness of the eye, to angular magnitudes when seen horizontally; and tho other is an effect of the (Illation of tho pupil under the feebler light reaching us from the heavenly bodies when near the horizon, such dilation tending to magnify the images received. He finds experimental proof of these theories, and shows the absurdity of the common explanation that intervening objects enable us better to estimate tho real sizo of the sun and moon. —The discovery lately made by Prof. A. H. Sabin, of tho University of Vermont, of the process <>£ making milk sugar from whey is attracting increased attention amoag scientists.

"One was a-scared and the other dursn't." Such seems to be tlic verdict of the world to-Jay ■when measures of peaceful arbitration of the Anglo-Russian difficulty are inanifestadi and yet we who have unmistakably evidenced by our treatment of it from its inception that war was not impending do not join the apparent jeer. Both powen have exercised good judgment iv showing their willingness to have the trouble arbitrated by o peaceful ruler. The boundaries of a'l governments should be definitely settled as soon as practicable as ■well as all matters in any v.ay affecting other powers, in order to guard against trouble. Ambition in governments is as justifiable as it is with corporations or individuals, and when that ambition is acknowledged as being inordinate or improbable of realization, the world should applaud the decision to forbear the unnecessary sacrifice of thousands of lives and millions of wealth, and not stand by like disappointed boys who could not goad the dogs to light....

CEMETERY MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

CEMETERY MEETING. The meeting of citizens held last Saturday evening at Workmen's Hall for the purpose of considering the project of establishing a cemetery for Sausalito was pretty well attended. Mr. Furlong called the meeting to order, and Mr. Slinkey was nominated chairman and Mr. Burns secretary. The Chair briefly stated the purpose for which the meeting was called, and the urgent need of a suitable burial ground, adding that as the matter would depend principally upon the action the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company would take, it would be advisable to hear first what the Company would propose; and Mr. Harrison being present he would like to hear from that gentleman in relation to the matter. Mr. Harrison stated that the original idea was to take the top of the hill for a cemetery, and that the Company had allotted the ground for the purpose. The town had not grown very rapidly, but he was glad to see, as manifested in the meeting, the marks of its growth which would justify est...

The Marvel* of a I'lcce of I.ace. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

The Marvel* of a I'lcce of I.ace. [New York Paper.]. There is a marvelous thing in the way of Point d'Alencon lace seeking a purchaser in New York. It Is a complete dress of exceeding fineness, and has D his tory. It once served as part of the bridal toilet of a young girl at that time the only surviving daughter of a well-known Widow. The bride who wore this married the only son and heir of one of the richest of Baltimore's nierchiiul princes. It was a love marriage, and the lace a gift from the groom. Six months later the -young wife closed her eyes in death. Her husband, frantic with grief, could not bear the sight of anything reminding him of the past, and all the personal belongings of the young wife were sent to her poor, broken-hearted mother. This was years ago, and now that mother in her old age, by the strange and cruel chances of fate, is left in poverty; One by one the valuable possessions have been sold, until finally the bridal robe, with its pathetic history, concerni...

YACHTING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

YACHTING. Last Saturday was the opening day for the San Francisco Yacht Club. A very enjoyable time was held at the Clubhouse. Governor Stoneman was over in his steam launch. The fleet started out on a cruise to sail by signals from the flag-ship, but there being no wind this part of the program was frustrated. The Chispa is bending her sails and has had her cabin very neatly renovated. She has had 900 pounds of lead put under her bow and now sails much stiffer than before. The yacht Thetis was found drifting in Suisun bay by two fishermen, a few days ago with her main boom carried away. She was brought toTurner's yard Benicia and repaired in time to be down last Saturday for the opening. It is supposed that she had dragged her moorings. Mr. John Lee and family have taken up quarters on the yacht White Wing for a short time. On Sunday the Chispa was out with a party of twenty-six, and a very pleasant day was spent. As a mark of Col. Peter Donohue's appreciation of the fine condition...

SAN RAFAEL LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 7 May 1885

SAN RAFAEL LETTER. (BY OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT.) San Rafael, May 6, '85. The weather is at last believed to be settled down to business and help our town to reap its usual summer harvest. A number of transients have already struck camp and houses furnished or unfurnished are in demand. The hotels are filling up but not so rapidly as they might be expected to, but as the season has not advanced far the propects are very good. Orders were issued from the office of Adjutant General Cosby last Monday for the mustering in of the San Rafael military company on Thursday evening the 14th inst. Lieut. Col. J. Mervyn Donahue has been appointed to enroll the members on that night. There are about 100 names on the company's roll, and Company D, 5th Infantry, 2d Brigade, N. G. C. will doubtless be the finest in the state's militia. They are all young men, something which none of the other companies can boost of, and their discipline as already manifested will be a credit to themselves and to t...
