The Union. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 March 1860

The Union. Across the crested billows of the ocean Storms come and go; The rolling waves are heaped in wild commotion; The depths are calm below. What though the broken billows none may number AVhat though the tides Heave like a bosom in unquiet slumber, Far down, the calm abides. The sea is one the crested billows under, Though winds may roar, Storms rise, and gathering surges burst in thunder Along a wreck-strewn shore. Would'st save the Union ? Look upon the ocean, By storms oppressed, The wrathful billows driven in commotion, Across its peaceful breast. And yet it sleeps, though storms and tempests ever Above it sweep; And the blind rage of winds and waves may never Disturb its quiet sleep. A noble rest, its great heart never throbbing, In wild alarm; Though o'er its breast in fitful tones is sobbing The spirit of the storm. (Votes for Union. In rural districts, (so we quote,) Our women beg the right —to vote! Grant them the boon, O legislators! And save the Union from its trait...

A Male and Female Red-Wamus on their Wedding Tour. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 March 1860

A Male and Female Red-Wamus on their Wedding Tour. THEY VISIT PETERSBURG AND SIT EOR A PEN PICTURE FROM THE EDITOR OP THE NEWS. The train from Grafton, due here at 11:40 A. m., under the management of that gentlemanly, amiable, popular and efficient conductor, Captain Scott, a few days since stop ped at one of the way stations to take on a couple newly married. Both were young, and both were verdant; having been raised in the wilds of Western Virginia, neither of them had ever been fifty miles away from home. They had heard of railways, locomotives, steamboats and hotels, but had never experienced the comforts of any of the aforementioned institutions. Jeems and Lize had determined on this, and the most important event in their lives, to visit the city and see the world, particularly that part of it known as Petersburg. No wonder they were amazed and delighted when the locomotive,(steaming and snorting, with the train of beautiful crimson cars following it, came in sight. 'These you...

Mono Lake. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 March 1860

Mono Lake. The recent discovery of gold, silver, and other ores in the region of Mono Lake has created quite a furor in the way of wagon road enterprises throughout the State. This is right, and commendable, nnd worthy ol emulation by the good citizens of our valley. Some weeks since we called the attention of the public to the route of Colonel Walker, known as "Walkers Pass," ■ leaving the overland road a short distance south of Tule River, thence crossing the heads of the southern branches of that river, striking Kern river above the canon about fifty miles from Keyesville, opposite Owens' Lake. Col. Walker passed through this route the first time in the year 1834, and several times since, and pronounces it beyond all doubt the most feasible route from any part of California to that new Eldorado of the west. Prodigous efforts are being made by business men and capitalists from San Francisco and Sacramento, and through all the northern counties to obtain the command of the immense ...

From Washington. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 March 1860

From Washington. The correspondent of the St. Louis Republican, furnishes the following items of news from Washington, under date of the Ist and 2nd inst: It is well understood that the change of the day of the Chicago Convention, from the 13th of June to the 17th of May; was effected by Mr. Seward's friends and in his behalf.— This, together with other circumstances, would show that he is not to be indorsed blithe conservative Republicans. The Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and the New York Republican State Committee, and now the Republican National Executive Committee here, have indorsed him, and be the nominee he must. The Whig and American Union Committees were to fix some day in the middle of May for their convention. If they wish to conic in between the other two conventions with their own, they may fix the first of May. ; They will probably, in the present aspect of i politics, nominate Mr. Rates, leaving it to ! the Republicans to adopt him or encounter ' him. The Secret...
