13 S? ^ 41 Southwest Chinese Journal JUNE 1980 a salute to new mothers By WEINING C. CHANG, Ph.D. Psychologist It's that time of the year again when many of my friends are expecting a welcome new addition to their families. It is nice to know that there will be new faces in our community; it is even nicer to know that these babies are the result of great love and careful planning. Babies not only bring delight to their parents; they also bring awesome responsibilities. When a woman gives birth to a child, she not only enters a different phase of her life, but also embarks on a journey of joint growth with her child. We all know that infants are physi- cally fragile and helpless and should be treated with great care and attention, however, many of us fail to realize that an infant is also a psycholo- gically vulnerable being. Since Freud, modern psy- chologists have placed more and more importance on the first several years of a person's life. Dur- ing infancy, usually the first two ...

JUNE 1980 5? & 9^ Southwest Chinese Journal 14 CHANNEL 8 to produce Documentary on " BALLET in CHINA" Since the Normalization of relations between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China, Hous- ton has been a focal city for economic and tech- nological exchange. Perhaps as a natural outgrowth of this relationship, Houston is also making great strides in the area of cultural exchange. One of the most exciting projects now underway, and a first of its kind in the nation is the production by KUHT Channel 8, of a documentary on Ballet in China as viewed close up on a recent visit by Ben Steven- son, Houston Ballet's artistic director and choreog- rapher. Stevenson was on his second trip to China as a visiting instructor with the Ballet Schools of Peking and Shanghai, and during this 5 week assignment, a film crew headed up by Channel 8 co- producers Robert Cozens and Elisabeth Kaderli re- corded his teaching experience and interviews with students. The editing process is still u...

JUNE 1980 S? 9^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal 20 Reflections continued from page 21 are harvesting benefits of well paying jobs, live in homes with all of the comforts of affluence. They send their children to American schools. Let there again be no misunderstanding. The Fes- tival is non political. Our loyalty is to the United States of America. If this be flag waving, so be it. It's about time some of us waved the American flag. That is one reason why we were indeed privileged to have the 442nd Regimental Combat Team as our guests. They were the Niseis who were sent to Europe for combat during World War II. One of their orders was to rescue a trapped all Texas division. The Niseis did their job as ordered and in the pro- cess of accomplishing their mission, suffered over 60% casualties within their ranks. This group volunteered for service. They foresaw that they had to set an example of loyalty to America and the cost for many was their lives. Senator Inouye was a member of this t...

JUNE 1980 Southwest Chinese Journal 22 m I ■ a DEAR DAD. As Father's Day draws near, memories of my childhood and of my relationship with my father resurface. As 1 fondly reminisce these times, i ponder over how my feelings for my father had changed over the years. The dictionary definit- ion of a father is "a male parent or "one who exercises paternal care over another; a fatherly provider or protector." Certainly my father ful- filled this role. However, the role of a father goes far beyond that of a protector and provider. As a child, my thoughts about my father were some ambiguous. School readers and television shows portrayed a father as one who worked nine to five job; an openly demonstrative person who hugged and kissed his children frequently. My father, on the other hand, did not quite fit this description. Rather, he was the typical Chinese father. He did not work nine to five, like many Chinese of his generation, he is self-employed and worked five to nine. As for being o...
