forest where he has been poaching. All this has the feel of a foreign ballad which one does not understand but which is nonetheless beautiful. The film can probably never be fully understood by a non-Spanish audience; it too per- fectly captures the Spanish milieu, to the point where assumptions are made above the heads of an American audience. This is not to say that the film is in- comprehensible or confusing, but that all meanings are hidden under the complex surface. Some things, however, can be gleaned. Furtivos was banned in Spain for almost two years because of its allegedly anti- Franco nature. This comes as a surprise to many viewers, because the film is not overtly political. The film is devoted to showing the underside of the "peaceful forest" of Spanish life, the image which Franco strove so hard to maintain. Behind this sham, everyone has something to hide: Angel, his illegal poaching: Milagros, her relationship to El Cuqui; the governor, his incompetence and buffoonery...
