soundout By Tammye Nash questions with Marianne DeLeon Marianne DeLeon took over as director of development for the Resource Center of Dallas last September. She has a master of arts degree from Southern Methodist University and has spent her career in the social services field. She is the daughter of Cuban refugees. What did you do before coming to the Resource Center of Dallas? I moved to Dallas in 2002 after spending two years working for the Peace Corps in Moldavia, in the lormer Soviet Union. I did development there for a women's reproductive health clinic. After I moved to Dallas, I was development coordinator for the International Rescue Committee, a refugee resettlement agency in North Dallas. Why tlitl you leave that job for the Resource Center? I am a lesbian, and I have always wanted to work with a more change-oriented organization promoting positive change in the GLBT community. A close friend forwarded an announce- ment about the job opening here to me, and I applied. A...

dossier A gay twist to Hitchcock biography BBC America's hit sketch comedy series "Little Britain" has seen its co-creator Matt Lucas become a star in the U.K and a cable TV cult celebri- ty in the United States. And soon the gay comedian will take on his first major big-screen role (he appeared briefly in the horror comedy "Shaun of the Dead") as the legendary Alfred Hitchcock. The biographical film starring Lucas — whose physical similarities to the director alone make him a nearly perfect choice — is scheduled to begin shooting later in 2006. Currently untitled, the movie will focus on Hitchcock's early years and will co-star Ewan McGregor in an as-yet-unknown role. Hitchcock devotees will probably see the finished product sometime in late 2007. local news Appeals court rules in livor of Dallas Observer in HIV case Billion-dollar lawsuit over unless plaintiff who sued alternative weekly for revealing his HIV-positive status appeals 3-judge panel's ruling By David Webb Staff Writer The 5th District Court of Appeals has rejected a billion-dollar civil suit filed by a Cathedral of Hope employee against the Dallas Observer for revealing his HIV-positive status. James A. Hemphill of Austin, the newspaper's attorney, said the ruling by a three-judge panel on the court on Jan. 24, ends the case unless the plaintiff decides to appeal the decision to the Texas Supreme Court or ask the Dallas appeals court for a rehearing. "It is certainly what we had hoped for and thought was the right result," Hemphill said. The plaintiff's lawyer, James N. Henry Jr., of Dallas, did not return two messages left on his office voice mail. Henry had argued that the newspaper violated the Texas Health and Safety Code, a confidential- ity law that prohi...

LIAISON Continued from Page 6 "1 think they all know what is going on, but I don't think they've ever come together on what is going on," Moore said. "This is an opportunity to bring the community, political leaders and the police force together on these issues." Moore said Martin's role would be different from that of her predecessor, Lynne Albright, who retired last year after 22 years of service, including 12 years as the liaison officer to the GLBT community. Martin, a lesbian who is an eight-year veteran of the force and works out of the central division substation, will be working more closely with the community to improve crime reporting, she noted. Albright's role was limited mostly to work at the annual Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade and other gay celebrations and to diversity training for police, Moore said. Moore said she is impressed by Kunkle's per- formance as police chief because he is adopting new strategies to fight crime. The expanded role of the liaison officer is...

loci news season, the club helped raise food and money for the food drive held each year by the local American Legion post to benefit needy fami- lies in the lake area. The staff and customers of friends also joined with a bar in Texarkana to help with a toy drive for needy children there. Bartlett and his customers sent about $1,300 in cash and "a couple of truckloads of toys" to the Texarkana nightclub. Friends also held a benefit for a patron who had lost his leg to diabetes. "We raised enough money to purchase a prosthetic limb for him," Bartlett noted. "We've almost always got something going on. If there's somebody out there who needs something, if they come and ask me for help, we will find a way to help them," Bartlett said. "There is a world of need out there, and the patrons of this club go out of their way to help anyone who needs help." That willingness to help out has also helped endear the club, its owner and its customers to the larger community in Gun Barrel City, as...

In a statement released Tuesday announcing his appointment, Lutes said, "I believe the mes- sage of SoulForce is visionary in that it has become clear we cannot win this battle [for GLBT civil rights] with legislative action alone. We must create a critical mass of people who are fed up with bigotry, prejudice and discrimination, and who are willing to speak out in the media and engage in other forms of non-violent resistance." "We must be on the offensive in confronting the religious and political assault on our civil rights, and not just in the defensive position of fighting the next anti-gay piece of legislation," Lutes said. White said the organization's new infrastruc- ture will "equip us to better equip activists for the critical work of stopping ... religious violence. Under Jeff's leadership, we will be taking this to the streets like never before." Transgender woman settles suit over firing St. Anselm College gave Blanchette a letter saying she was fired because she was transitioning Associated Press A former Saint Anselm College employee who changed genders from male to female says she and the school have reached a settlement over her firing. Sarah Blanchette sued the Catholic college in May, saying the college fired her as a senior com- puter programmer after she told school officials she planned to change genders. Blanchette, 53, then was known as Robert Blanchette. A spokesman for Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders said Wednesday it has set- tled the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court. In a statement, Blanchette said she hopes the suit will ben- efit others. "I hope that the law- suit has brought to public light the issues that can confront transgender people in the work place. We are not really that different from everyone else, and want the same basic things out of life: happiness, love, security, comfort and peac...
