One'new aud important item is thu arrival per Waratah of a new and strong American express'waggon: and horses, to 'run botweop: Maryborough and Gayndah. Tho enterprise is a very spirited one, and will, I trust, prove a profitable'speculation to the proprietors. The roads aro tho only drawback. At the, present, time they are in ii deplorable condi- tion.'' Mr. Longlands has, howevor, bridged most of the worst creeks, and there is.now a surveyor como to survey and lay out the main road from hero to Gayhdah, so that there is every prospect of their being put in ropairwithout unnecessary delay. MR. WALSH AND THE NATIVE POLICE COMMITTEE. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 24 June 1861

MR. WALSH AND THE NATIVE POLICE COMMITTEE. The subjoined correspondence has been for- warded to us for publication, and we print: it with all tho more pleasure because we: are aware that attempts havo been made to magnify tho "offence" committed by Mr. Walsh in not attending the summons of the committee, and because we think that Mr. Walsh has acted properly and, judiciously in vindicating himself from the uncalled-for aspersions cast upon his charactor by .the Colonial Secretary.   (To the Editor of the Courier.)   Sir, Subjoined are copies of two letters which I will thankyou to publish. The first I wish printed, that the members of the Legislative Assembly may see that it does not contain the offensive matter which the leader of the government, in the heat of debate managed to invest it with; and the second that the public may discern the real reason for that ministerial onslaught. I am, yours obediently,       WM, ...

ASSISTED IMMIGRATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 25 June 1861

ASSISTED IMMIGRATION. THE .Ministerial experiment, at; assisted   immigration has been so successful, that it ought to embolden the government to;   submit a much larger, and more compre- hensive scheme to the legislature. The sum   already voted is .altogether too insignificant for the wants of the country; and the fact of the whole of it having been taken up within at month of the date at which the new regulations came into force, speaks   volumes in favor of the capacity of the colony to absorb population. It is under-   stood that a large number of applications for assisted passages have been sent in and de-   clined on account, of the prior exhaustion of the funds available for the purpose; and the presumption is that a vote of ten times the amount actually sanctioned by the legislature would not more than suffice for the demand which would arise   in the course of the next twelve months....
