JUNCTION RESERVE MAKE IT A PLEASURE GROUND. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 19 January 1929

JUNCTION RESERVE MAKE IT A PLEASURE GROUND. At Monday's meeting of Cabra V«le Council, H. Chambers applied for permis sion to erect a stall at the Junction at 25/ per year. The area is about 20 acres. Aid. Camkin said the land was of benefit to outsiders, and seeing that the residents paid for it, they were entitled to some return from those who use it He suggested advertis ing that the land was available for lease as a pleasure ground for, say, 10 years terms. He moved that tenders be invited, in accordance with this suggestion, the building to be approved by the Council. Aid. Hill asked who should fence the area. Aid. Camkin: The applicant. Aid. Hill instanced how at Dec Why and elsewhere people paid 7/G per week for camping. The junction reserve was an ideal spot. He thought the relief loan might be ex pended on this reserve to make it u pleasure ground, and & paying pro position. In the meantime, however, he was prepared to call tenders. Aid. THE TREE [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 19 January 1929

THE TREE Beloved of birds, who find in iti ample spread, safety from the swift attacks of marauding enemies, a grand old oak graces the eastern bank of Prospect Creek, on portion of the Oakdene Estate. Deeprooted in the loamy soil near the creek bank, its short, sturdy barrel ..branches a few feet from the ground and spreads knarled old limbs up wards and outwards to wave defiance to some of the greatest gales that the blustering south has ever sent across. Spreading with untended grace to more than 100 feet in diameter, the dome-shaped canopy rises to about 40 feet and defies the fiercest rays of the hottest day, except where here and there shifting shafts of sunlight filter through when the topmost branches sway to a passing breeze. Its staunch old lower limbs spreading and drooping towards the ground that bore then, form an irresistablc attraction to every child who sees them, and no doubt there are scores now taking their place in the whirl igig of life as it calls and catches ....

BLIND CRICKETERS' APPRECIATION. (To the Editor of "The Biz"). Sir,-On behalf of the Industrial Blind Cricket team, will you kindly express our sincere and heartfelt thanks? On December 29 last the team and also a team from the In dustrial Blind Institution of Mel bourne, went to St. John's Park oval and played one of our three. test matches, and the good people of St. John's Park entertained at dinner and afternoon tea both the teams and the friends who came with us from Sydney. The ladies not only pre pared a sumptuous dinner but waited on us, making us all feel entirely at our ease, making light of the work and trouble, as if it were a plea sure. We understand that a number of residents banded themselves into a committee for the purpose and carried out the entertainment of the interstate teams of Industrial Blind Cricketers; and so far we are not in the know as to who they all are, or who were the leaders, if any; but we desire to express our sincerc thanks to them all for all the...

THE GARDEN (By an Expert, for "The Biz" Newspaper). RANUNCULUS AND ANEMONE. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 19 January 1929

THE GARDEN (By an Expert, for "The Biz" News paper). RANUNCULUS AND ANEMONE. Everyone knows and admires the lovely ranunculus and anemone; yet few people' know that both can be1 easily raised from seeds, and will produce flowers the first season, * just as good as if bulbs had been planted. The seeds of ranunculus germin ate! very surely; but are at}1 times rather slow to come up, especially the early sowings, but they are well worth waiting for. Sow some this month, or next, in fine free soil, and keep them moist right through. You'll be quite' satisfied with results. When the youngsters are half an inch high, prick them out on to rich line soil, either in small sheltered beds, or into other boxes, and keep them growing stdadily 011 until they are a couple of inches high. Then transplant them to permanent beds in the garden. Choose dull or show ery jyeather for; transplanting. Remember that the ranunculus is a greedy plant. Feed it well, and you will get enormous flowers of the mos...

Collision on Bridge. MOTOR CYCLE AND SIDE CAR HITS CAR. [Newspaper Article] — The Biz — 19 January 1929

Collision on Bridge. MOTOR CYCLE AND SIDE CAR * HITS CAR. On igunday at midday, a motor cycle driven by Kenneth Martin, of Roseberry Road, Guildford, with Mervyn Duff, also of Guildford, in the sidc-car, collided with a motor car, on Dale's Bridge, Fairfield. Martin had his tongue badly cut and injuries to his nose; while Duff received bruises and cuts about the legs: Both were treated by Dr. Hamilton, and allowed to go home. It appears that Martin swerved to avoid some ruts in the road and be fore he could get back to his right side, the cycle struck the bumper bar of the car, which was being driven by John Bosci. The bar and radiator of the car were damaged, while the Wheel of the cycle was bent about, and the lamp broken.
