:MIINERS' MHE'aTING AT SANDY CREEK. A: numorously-attonded mooting of miners was hold at the 'Miners' Rest hotel, on Saturday ovening, 31st ult. Thoe preoideiet'of Yaekandahndh Shire, Mr'John Quirk, presided, and, in a few well-chosen introductory remarks, conb gratulated the miners on being keenly alive to thoi inuterests, as the largo at tendance that night manifested. No one could deoplore more than himself aiy symptoms of antagonism between the minor and the selector, and lie was san guine that oefective legislation could, and in the soear future would,' render the interests of the two induistries more idon tical and sympatlhoti than unfortunately was the case at present. Mr George I'Ausen proposed the first resolution-"?That the Mining Depart ment be requested to imenodintoly pro claim the pjromised extension to the Sandy Crook goldfields reserve." Wodonga & Towong Sentinel. "Awake ! Arise ! Or be for ever fallen !" —MILTON. FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 1886. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 13 August 1886

?tooobng; ý & "?oý o lng ?cnti ltcl. "Awake I Ariso! Or be for over fallen !" --MILTON. .FIDA Y, A U(UGSI' 13, 1880. Tire bsat friends 'of the democratic form of,government cannot but admit that people do raot naturally reoverence its?fundmeloctal principles. Civilisedd society, as at presoen constituted, does no ret enst on "equf!lity," and decidedly govcei'mennt did. not take its rise in that principle. As a fact, the world was rather old b~fore it received the leaisn recognition' from any portion of mankind, and its influence has been a thing of'slow gr'owth. It is at variance with the venerable systems of church governlolent which the worldl hans ver known, rid in one instance only has it been identilied with the exorcise of teniporl power whlich has left a lasting impression oni the destinies and charac ter of the race. The democratic fprm of government, though not a now thing, cannot boast very much. of archaic sanction or usage, and there mset he' in human nature some...

TALLANGATTA JOTTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 13 August 1886

TALLANGATTA JOTTINGS. (By KANT.) Advance, Tallangatta. Mr Carkeek's new private residence is rapidly approach ing completion, and will be one of the ornaments of the town. The garden is artistically laid out, and planted with the choicest trees. People on the other side of Tallangatta Creek are crying out about the wretched condition of the footbridge across that stream. The structure is a veritable man trap, and, if situated anywhere other than on private property, would undoubtedly lead to another such case as Jeffcott's. For months children have been pre vented from attending the State school, owing to the unsafe condition of this bridge. 'The shire council cannot be ig norant of its instability, and yet nothing is being done in the matter. Who is to be the new engineer ! who will get the secretaryship are questions. that one hears very frequently. I am not in a position to answer, though I am of opinion that the assistant engineer has a strong claim on the former appoint ment. T...
