TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 30 October 1903

To the Editor. Sir, — Many oi the cane-growers of North Moreton are wondering what will be the outcome of the inquiry likely to be made by the jGovernment into the unsatisfactory financial position 01 lour ot tne central sugar mills mentioned in Mr. Kidston's budget speech,' and the causes underlying that position. In view of such inquiry taking place, | a few remarks re the present | method of purchasing cane for the [ Moreton Mill may not be out of place. Any observant person can not but notice that each crushing is started by the taking off of all j frosted caHe, and it seems only right ! aud proper this should be done, j that is, providing sufficient sugar is j made therefrom to pay expenses on j treating such cane ; but when one sees cjyie in an almost rotten state brought to the mill, and also cane with green tops left on, such a practice can only result in loss. If car.e was paid for in respect to the amount of sugar obtainable there from, growers would be more care- j ful in...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 30 October 1903

To the Editor. Sir, — There is a maxim which I think 'Old Chum' and 'Citizen' both should well ponder over first before attackingany class ot citizens, and that is to pick out the motes from their own eyes. If to them the Holy Book reads that Sunday playing of cricket is a sin, let me ask if it reads also that the working of ' thine ass, thine horse, thine wife, and thine servant' on a Sun day is a sin. Of course one is work — the other pleasure. What divides the good from the sin in either case? — Yours, &c, Youxg Chum. |
