INDIAN CATTLE CANE. [Newspaper Article] — Lilydale Express and Yarra Glen, Wandin Yallock, Upper Yarra, Healesville and Ringwood Chronicle — 17 April 1914

INDIAN CATTLE CANIE. In the Illawarra distriot, New South Wales, an experiment with Indian corn has been carried out at Gerringong by MIr. Thos. Burke. This fodder has hitherto been thought only suitable-for warm and humid climates, such is the Northl Coast., In- November, 1910 , :Mr. Burke obtained sufficient cuttings for a plot 60 x 30 feet; and'planted in drills U inches deep, 4 feet apart. The cut tings were planted in pairs 3 feet apart on the drills. Since planting two out tings have been taken, and another is now. rehdy. He found the cane best where growth was concerned eight months-after planting, and equally good after each successive cutting. The one planting is supposed to give good results for five years. From observations M1r 13urke has found cattle improve in oon dition when fed on it, and -take to it -readily, though its milk producing qua lities are not equal to maize or lucerne. Pigs eat the stalks readily and they fat ten well when it is given as fodder. Calves thr...
