A lawyer built himself an office in the form" of a hexagon-six-sided. The novelty of the structure attracted thie attention of some Irishmen who were passing by ; they made a full stop and viewed thie building very critically. The lawyer somewhat disgusted at their nuriosity, lifted up the window, put his head out and addressed them,- ' Why do ye stand there like a pack of blockheads ga.zing at my office; do you take it for a church ?" " Faix." ansiwered one of thi?m, "I vas thinkin' so, till I saw the devil poke hii head out the windy!"

The deputa tion asked for railway extension to Mirboo. Mr. Patterson said that the question to be considered after the surveys were completed was, would either of the proposed lines pay ? anl could they be extended beyond Mir boo ? A member of the deputation assured the Minister that an easier route than that at present advocated could be found, and that the extension beyond Mirboo towards the coast could be accomplished without the least difficulty. Mr. Patterson pro mised to send up an engincer, and re quested that the proposed new route might b pointed out to the gentleman lie would send. The Minister further said that he.would.consult the Engi ncer-in-Chief, and see if some cheap form of construction could not be ar ranged for, so that a line on which a speed not exceeding ten miles an hou...

REMINISCENCES OF QUEENSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 2 September 1880

REMINISCENCES OF QUEENS LAND. nTY A QUEENSLAND DIOGER. That the European has a deep rooted prejudice against the blandand child-like Celestial is a fact that can not be gainsaid. That we like him best when he is furthest from us, and would like him better still if he kept. himself within thie limits of his own lowery land I readily admit; but I fe.l bound to say that, during my re silence of eight years in North Queensland, during which time l eiame in contact with thenm many times and uniidcr various conditionls, I never heard them called "'greasy vermin," nor lo 1 think they deserved such an ,pprobrious epithet. The question may well be asked,-how is it that they manlage to obtain a foothold amoig Europeans, seeing that thepre judice against them is so universal ? It is because they are divided into two classes, each appealing to the selfish ness of a section of our own. people, thus-the white storekeeper has not the slightest objection to the Chinee digger, but he hates like pois...
