The Forbes Advocate, FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1912. LOOKING FORWARD. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 12 January 1912

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1012. LOOKING FORWARD. I There is every reasonable foundation for the belief that the future holds out good things for Forbes. The roaring prosperity of the old gold\x=req-\ mining days proved ephemeral, and left the settlement to struggle on its o.wn merits. Many years have passed, and the town has gone on; steadily gaining in wealth and importance, its progress in this respect being cer\x=req-\ 'tainly aboye the average. Taking the State right through," the instances of rapid, internal growth have been few and far between,, simply owing to the fact that the desired influx of population has not been received, while the metropolis has absorbed very much more than its fair share of what natural and stimulated increase there has _been. This state of affairs is due from the land policy of the past, which permitted the alienation and cornering of huge areas of the finest land, and other causes,' amongst which might..be included an absolute lack of initiative and stat...

OUR SERIAL STORY. WHEN A WOMAN WOOS. CHAPTER V (Continued). [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 12 January 1912

OUR SERIAL STORY. CHAPTER V (Continued). This making her the agent of their misery seemed to her a peculiar cruelty. She was fast losing patience with her father. It was true that he was in a difficult position; he could . not protest before the younger members of the family ,nor could he be held' repsonsible for what happened when he was out of the house, but surely he could find some way to exert his authority? She began to won\x=req-\ kier, indeed, if the whole thing were ^iot originally his _fault ;if he had iot driven her mother to secret iri\x=req-\ : ulgence by tactless opposition to a comparatively harmless glass in company. But she could not remember ^iat he had ever objected to alcohol principle; he was not even a teetotaller himself, though Audrey suspected that he drank .a little whisky mow in company merely because his i|ibstention would excite remarks >hich might lead to a betrayal of the secret that was poisoning his home. The tragic farce of "doctor's orders" was ...

CHAPTER VI. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 12 January 1912

CHAPTER VI. Unaware of the emotional disturbance behind it, Fielding read Audrey's letter with startled perplexity, some amusement, and a little chagrin. She wrote, without preliminary address— "I am coming out to the bungalow on Thursday afternoon, and will take my chance of finding you there, if you don't happen to be alone, please prop open the window of the sitting\x=req-\ room with a book. I can see it from the path under the trees, and will wait about until the coast is clsav, or take another opportunity.—Yours, Audrey." The subscription pleased him by its directness, though, as he said, "She seems to take everything for granted." Not knowing that the note had been written under stress of passion, he was struck by not only the masculine terseness of the phrasing, but by the vigor of the actual handwriting. It revealed a force of character that he would not have surmised from the girl's delicate and sensitive appearance. Evidently in his mood of romantic sensibility, he had all...
