The object is to develops the capabilities of the Australian colony of Queensland for the growth of cotton, and it is pro- posed to employ imported Indian coolie labour. From the unquestionable value of the samples produced in Queensland it ts assumed that, whatever may be the nat are or extent of the future American supply, cotton caa be produced in that colony so as to compete profitably with ell other ó^esatptions. PUBLIC MEETING. A. PSBXic meeting was held lost evening tn receive the report of the Provisional Committee in reference to the formation of a Company for working a Freestone. Qcarry on Mackenzie Island, f. A Larnaoh, Esq., the Chairman, made a few introductory remarks, and then called on Mr. Shaw on behalf of the Committee to explain to the meeting what had been done. Mr. Shaw stated that gentlemen who were competent judges had visited the island st the request of the Commit- tee, and he would read the report which they had fumisned. It stated that there was abundance of the stone on the island-that it was of a very superior quality, and that with a trifling outlay it could be shipped on board vessels lying alongside the island hy means of a tramway of about 100 yards in length.
